Amazing 90 minute dive today with always-gracious @neonreefdoc protagonists + close friends @patricklouisart + @dave.conrad1.

We saw stunning shoals of fish, soft corals waving lazily in the gentle current, and the boys catalogued new species for the Neon Reef website (neonreefpark.com).

We also saw hard corals in various stages of bleaching, amid the 86 degree water temps.

The ocean and especially our nearshore reef systems are sensitive environments. Now more than ever, it’s important we protect them using thoughtful, common-sense methods like Patrick, Dave, and the Miami Beach community have employed - and what we chronicled in the film.

It’s also important to put yourself in these environments (safely). What we witness is not always perfect, but it gives us the context and perspective that plant the seeds of positive change.

Assuming you didn’t catch the film at @miamifilm + @outshinefilm this spring, here’s a quick breakdown:

🪸 Neon Reef is Miami Beach’s nearshore reef system
🤿 You can dive or snorkel it from shore (but please use a dive flag)
❤️‍🩹 While resilient, the reef, its denizens, and its visitors need sensible protection from damage by boats, poaching, and other threats
💡That’s exactly what Patrick + Dave are doing: visit ➡️ neonreefpark.com ⬅️ to learn how you can help

🔜 Our next screening of the film will be with @ptownfilm at the Water’s Edge Cinema in Provincetown, MA on Friday August 21 🗓️ during Carnival 🌈 (the theme is “Deep Sea Disco” 🪩🐠 - how perfect?) Stay tuned for more, this is a limited event and 🎟️ will sell out!

See you on the reef, and at the cinema! 🍿🪸

We picked up over 50lbs of trash in less than two hours!! 💪 Doing this reminds me that even small actions matter, especially when we do them together.
💞 See you guys in July! Let’s leave it better than we found it.
Be hot. Pick up trash.

Yesterday we removed 18 lbs of trash from Rockaway’s. Come June/July, I’m sure that number will double. This was our first clean up and reminder how much I love my NY community. We even saw dolphins! 😍🐬Next clean up is SATURDAY JUNE 27. Mark the cal! Thank you to all that joined.

Be hot. Pick up trash.

Sometimes you get to do something fun. Other times you get to do something good. In the case of @neonreefdoc I got to do something that was among the most fun things I’ve ever done, and will also do serious good by moving the cause of reef advocacy - as well as backyard activism everywhere - forward while challenging the form of documentary filmmaking. Best of all? I got to do it with two of my best friends, @patricklouisart + @dave.conrad1.

With a host of other creative, talented, passionate people we brought this project from a conversation under the proverbial mango tree in summer 2024 to a packed house @miamifilm premiere last night.

Thank you to @miamidadecounty commissioner @vickilynnlopez and @mayordlc for the recognition. And thank you to @miamifilm for inviting us to tell this story to a wide audience in our hometown. Also shout out to amigo @eugonline for undertaking bicoastal travel to moderate a wonderful, spirited post-film panel with myself, the boys, @commissionertanyakatzoffbhatt, editor @_blakepruitt_, and producer @internet.alex. And to all producers, backers, friends, supporters - it really takes a village. Special thanks to @lowell.bagley of @lhbproductions, I never thought oysters and beer would take us this far.

I didn’t take any photos at the premiere but here are a few that capture the spirit. Look out for more as this unique film continues to meet and inspire audiences in Miami and all over the map.

💛🤿 Alex

@neonreefdoc x @miamifilm 🌊🪸🐠

It started with a conversation—and turned into a movement.

We hosted a panel on reef advocacy and the power of documentary film at @thebetsyhotel with @miamifilm , bringing together voices committed to storytelling as impact.

From there, into #miamipride with some of the cast—celebrating the community that carries this work forward—and unforgettable nights at @vizcaya_museum and @miamifreedomtower .

Then the #premiere . A packed house at @silverspotcinema , where Commissioner Vicki Lopez (@commissionervickillopez ) honored us with congratulations for our work to protect the reef—followed by a Q+A led by @eugonline , with guests such as Commissioner Tanya Katzoff Bhatt (@commissionertanyakatzoffbhatt ) and director @alexmitow4real .

#community + #art → #impact .
This is what it looks like in motion.
