On the 23rd of September we had a really special catch to start our season. Spanish Fly was finishing up a 2 day charter when they decided to take a final swing at a Black Marlin on a little live bonito. It was late afternoon right before lines up but the combination of a pushing tide, blue water and a perfect bait was simply too good of an opportunity to pass by. Lo and behold, their “last cast” attempt would be one for the books. They dropped the bait right on the fishes head. In under 30 seconds from deploying their bait they were staring at a really big fish shaking its head as it slowly climbed out the water. Nothing beats the feeling of a big girl breaking the surface for the first time! An amazing fight ensued and our guide @graemeforrer even managed to get a few snaps of the fish in action. After two hours she was on the leader and they cut her free as sunset was fast approaching. We called her 900 and headed in for some celebratory drinks on the famous @bigbluevilankulo porch. Purple Malolo. Let the Dragon eat. 🐉💜 The 9″ Plus Kona Dragon Jetted: Purple Malolo from @tsutomu.hawaii , skirted in black over purple @moldcraftfishing Tuff Tails and finished with WTP tape for that classic look. Modeled after Garrett’s H1 Bullet, the Dragon runs deeper, with 7/32-inch jets adding skirt movement and a gurgling sound through its nostrils. Built from urethane resin, Garrett recommends it for ahi and ono, plus the shotgun position for marlin. Behind the Dragon is Garrett Lee, who established Tsutomu Lures in 2010. Each lure is handcrafted in Hawaii—poured, shaped, tuned, and polished by the team. His fishing roots run through his father, Bill, and uncle, Mike. Mike introduced him to lure making, while Gary Yamamoto of Magic Lure Enterprises later helped refine his machinery and designs. This massive machined block slides on machined rails and has multiple safeties to ensure everything moves how you want, when you want.
