A sophisticated urban ballet of survival, fashion, and global participation. For my Honours research, I wanted to challenge the deficit perspective that paints Johannesburg’s inner city as nothing but decay and disorder. De Villiers Street isn’t dying; it is a complex, resilient urban infrastructure made of alternative realities that mainstream planning completely misses. Abavuka Bephanda explores how thrift culture in the heart of Joburg is deeply tied to dignity, identity, and resistance. As a creative, traditional academic text wasn’t enough to capture this world, I had to let film inspired by the body of work of @jackmarkovitz @franadilla @jamalaun @zanonkosi, @intima_studios and photography tell the story.
