Last month, Tom and Justin spent the day with Sam Tierney (@intothebrew) and Andrew Hulle at the @firestonewalker Propagator in Venice Beach.

There was something special about brewing a nice, bright West Coast pilsner al fresco with these guys. West Coast Pilsners are a relatively new style born out of the LA brewing scene. The style marries the crispness and drinkability of traditional Pilsner with powerfully sweet hop aromatics ranging from passion fruit, guava, mango, and citrus. Styles like this evolve in real time, shaped by the brewers who question them.

This visit made us wonder, what could an East Coast Pilsner taste like, and what would make it unique?

With deep respect to the entire Firestone Walker team — and thanks to longtime friend and brewing mind Matt Brynildson (@fw_brewmaster) for the hospitality.

This trip certainly brought some West Coast perspective home to New Jersey.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our very very loved kitty Georgia. She was my/our first cat, and we will be forever cat lovers because of her.

Her morning greeting was a strong head butt and a needy meow. She was a perfect-record litter box user and a tolerant traveler on many long road trips to visit our families in northern ca. She loved an empty box, or basket, or baby crib, or a neatly stacked pile of clean laundry. She loved a sun soaked nap.

She once interrupted my work day by proudly carrying a live lizard into the house — and shortly after that, a live mouse. We didn’t intend to allow her outside, but one evening when we were in the back yard she wanted to join us so badly she busted through the window screen (slide 5).

She was the BEST cuddler. A book in my hand and Georgia in my lap — that was true contentment. When I was pregnant she’d drape herself over my big belly and purr purr purr on top.

She was a lifelong playmate and companion for Arlo. He’s never really known a life without her and he does seem to be looking for her now around the house, a little lost. Getting them as babies just a few months apart was a bit chaotic at first, but it didn’t take long until they were best buds. Their snuggles warmed my heart so much. We all loved to watch them wrestle and play and really get out their wild sides.

Georgia had cancer, and though its progression was swift we got to give her final snuggles and kisses, and we knew when it was time. We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter cat and her presence around our house was a blessing we’re so grateful for.
