A demanding coach isn’t automatically a bad coach.
And a supportive coach isn’t automatically a good one.
When athletes are learning a skill, they need an appropriate level of challenge.

If everything is easy, predictable and constantly reinforced, there may not be enough pressure on the athlete to adapt.
But take that challenge too far and a different problem can emerge.
Instead of thinking:
“How do I solve this?”
the athlete starts thinking:
“How do I avoid messing up?”
That’s a very different learning environment.

Good coaching lives somewhere between those extremes.
Athletes should be allowed to struggle. They should receive honest feedback. They should occasionally leave practice frustrated. They should be held accountable to standards.
But they should also feel comfortable experimenting, asking questions, attempting difficult things and making mistakes without believing every mistake is a failure.

And that balance won’t look exactly the same for every athlete.
One player may respond extremely well to a demanding coaching style. Another may need more autonomy and encouragement before that same level of pressure becomes productive.
So as a parent, don’t only ask:
“Is this coach tough?”
Ask:
“Is this environment helping my athlete become more confident, adaptable and independent?”

There’s a big difference between being uncomfortable because you’re growing and being uncomfortable because you’re afraid to fail.
Learning to recognize that difference matters.

One of the biggest changes we see when club season starts is athletes going from a summer filled with individual repetitions to almost none.
And to be clear: we’re NOT advocating for adding a huge training load on top of club practices, games and tournaments.
The workload should change during the season.
But team training and individual development serve different purposes.
A club coach has an entire group to develop while preparing the team tactically and physically for competition. That naturally means there may be less time for hundreds of intentional repetitions focused on one athlete’s first touch, weak foot, ball manipulation, striking technique or other individual needs.

That’s why supplemental development doesn’t always have to mean another full training session.
It could be:
• One focused technical session per week
• Training every other week
• 15–20 minutes of intentional ball work at home
• Following a structured individual program between team sessions

The goal isn’t MORE training.
It’s maintaining enough intentional repetition that the individual qualities developed during the offseason continue progressing during the season.
Offseason → Build
In-season → Maintain + Refine
Adjust the training load. Don’t completely remove the individual development.

Confidence in contact isn’t just about being stronger — it’s about knowing how to use your body.
Technique + proprioception + strength all play a role in staying balanced and composed when contact comes.

Here’s a simple partner drill to challenge stability from different angles while maintaining good body position.
One of many ways to build more confidence through contact on the field.

A good first touch isn’t just about controlling the ball.
It’s about having a purpose behind it.
Where’s the pressure? Where’s the space? What’s my next action?

Too often, first touch is trained without the scanning, decision-making and intention that actually makes it effective in a game.
Don’t just train the touch. Train the decision behind it

Where players come to work⚔️
Great having Manchester United midfielder and England international Kobbie Mainoo getting his work in at Invictus.

Different clubs. Different countries. Different levels.
Same standard.

We’ve built an environment trusted by players competing at the highest levels of the game — and that same environment is here every day for the next generation.
If the standard is good enough for the best, why wouldn’t you demand it for yourself?

There is no secret. Only repetition. Mastery belongs to those willing to do the same things, exceptionally well.

Heading is one of the more complex techniques in soccer.
It requires timing, awareness, proper contact, body control, and the ability to direct the ball—all within a split second.

A few key details can make it much easier to learn:
- Track the ball early
- Attack the ball instead of waiting for it
- Make contact with the center of your forehead

Send this to a home who can’t header for 💩 & follow for more training tips.
