THE DRIVE HOME: Seminars 🚗🥋 Driving home from the Dorian Olivarez seminar today, I kept thinking about how fortunate we are to have access to people at this level. When I started jiu-jitsu, having a world-class black belt come through your gym felt like a huge event. Now at INVICTUS, we’ve had nights where three black belts are on the mats teaching at the same time. That changes your baseline. You start to forget how unusual it is. Watching Dorian today was another reminder. He’s incredibly talented and athletic, but what stood out was how thoughtfully he approaches wrestling and how he’s constantly trying to make his movement as efficient as possible. There’s a lot to learn from someone operating at that level. My biggest takeaway: don’t let extraordinary access start feeling ordinary. Train with great people. Ask questions. Go to seminars. Take advantage of the people who walk through your academy doors. You never know which detail is going to change the way you see jiu-jitsu. Huge thank you to Dorian and everyone who came out today. 🙏 Tomorrow we keep it going with Dr. Jenna Mattera breaking down shoulders and knees. Keep learning. #BJJ #JiuJitsu #BrazilianJiuJitsu #Wrestling #MartialArts

IMPROVE YOUR GUARD with a simple KNEE exercise! One of my former seminar attendees recently told me that this one exercise, when done consistently, eliminated YEARS of knee pain… so I HAD to share this! That’s not guaranteed to be the same for everyone, but it does have the ability to gap the joint and create space, which improves circulation and the way the joint moves. It also has the potential help your closed guard, half guard, mount, and other positions too! Join me @invictustrainingcenter in Beverly, MA SUNDAY 9/27 | 11 AM-1:30 PM $50 | Registration required! Register Online: MATTERAPT.COM/MATREADY If you try this exercise or have done it before, let us know what you think in the comments!

Wanna join a cult? I’ve been in a lot of cults. And before anyone panics, I’m using “cult” a little tongue-in-cheek here. I’m talking about cultures — groups of people with their own language, rituals, inside jokes, obsessions, and weird little ways of seeing the world. I used to do half Ironmans. Great people. Healthy lifestyle. But definitely a weird cult. Everyone talking about bike splits, transition times, shaving 30 seconds off something, and spending thousands of dollars to become slightly more aerodynamic. Then there are musicians. I grew up in that world too. Incredible artists and some of my best friends — but also a culture where there can be a hilarious amount of arrogance around something that is ultimately subjective. Then there’s pickleball. I love pickleball. But some of you need to relax. It’s supersized ping pong. 😂 I also grew up in a charismatic church. I met some genuinely great people there. Some of my closest friendships came from that world and have lasted to this day. But looking back, there were definitely parts of that culture that could get a little… culty. And then there’s the best cult I’ve ever joined: Jiu-jitsu. A bunch of grown adults put on pajamas, roll around on the floor, try to strangle each other, and then spend the rest of the night talking about how they could’ve strangled each other better. Completely ridiculous. And I absolutely love it. Because underneath all the weirdness, I found a culture of people willing to challenge themselves and each other. People willing to be humbled. People obsessed with learning something incredibly difficult. People who willingly spend years being terrible at something just to become a little less terrible tomorrow. And somewhere along the way, you develop a skill that genuinely feels like a superpower. Maybe the lesson isn’t to avoid cults. Maybe it’s to choose your cults carefully. Find cultures that challenge you. Find people who make you better. Find something weird enough that the rest of the world doesn’t completely understand why you love it. And then go all in. If you’re still looking for your cult… I know a place @invictustrainingcenter
