The erasure of Afghan women

“The new Afghan Government has ordered the beheading of manequins in shop windows, some vendors opposing and covering their faces as an alternative. Their disturbing heads wrapped in cloth sacks, aluminum foil, or black plastic bags contrast with the ornate dresses they showcase which women are forbidden to wear on the street.

The Taliban based the order on a literal and strict interpretation of Islamic law that prohibits statues and images in human form, as they could be worshiped as idols, although it was also fitting with the Taliban's campaign to remove women from the public eye. Women cannot access parks or gyms and, except on rare occasions, must be accompanied by a man to be able to go out.

‘I see myself behind these shop windows,’ an Afghan woman who has been deprived of all her rights.”

Women are being erased. This is not the public eye. This is existence.
You don’t want to see them. But they are still here.

—

Three friends pondered on the structure for a better place. Each of us set out to contemplate a site for our deliberations. In my imaginary and subconscious, I discovered an island; one where the pain of an entire planet moves through, processed before it spills back out into the interconnected systems of our
water, soil, air, power and emotions.
Symbols, characters, landscapes and meaning are brewing a breeding ground for physical and emotional endeavor.

The sketching and mapping of this imaginary system; A fiction strolls through the streets of reality, reality sails the seas of fantasy, and a dream wanders, stumbling, through what we’ve determined as the real world.

It is still unclear whether this island — hope..
is an ancient home that whispers to us omnipresently as a reminder of a warmer place we’ve come from, or rather a destination that may also never touch the soles of our feet.

Here lies a world in exploration, where knowledge and reality dress themselves in fantasy, inebriated by childlike curiosity, allowing instinct and innocence to guide the way toward discoveries more sincere than any answer to a soberly posed question.

Snippets of “The boxes of the west: Apartheid, imperialism & colonization(History with Palestine)” exhibited.

Excerpts from longer video edit projected as part of the exhibition. Thank you @oriolcardoso for researching and speaking with me.

“The varying components of this piece summon a history sistematically distorted and erased, “unboxing” the oppression that has enclosed Palestine’s land and people.

Embodied by a wooden trunk, the land of Palestine is carved, and cut by a series metal slabs etched with various historical dates, referencing key events in the timeline of structural violence which Palestine has faced.

Central to the piece is a wooden cast of a key, made from dust collected during carving - an omen to the life and resistance that co-exists with this history of violence. However, exhibited is only the cast from which it was made. Other antique keys and chains surround the piece, completed with the hammer used to nail the plaques, and an antique pitcher.

12.12.24 the composition was activated, recounting the inhumane history that has destroyed Palestinians and their land for the past century. The key was passed around, and the piece was set ablaze. Testimonies assumed the position of a spectator, the key was disintegrated in the fire, which nobody extinguished in time.

The absence of an essential part to this showcase must serve as a severe reminder. May we be cautioned that real fire rages on, and every second we watch this fire unmoved, our humanities char with it. The oppression of Palestine and of countless others across the globe is directly tied to the exploitation we accept in our own homes. Our hands, governments, policies, alliances - our silence - they have dug these slices deeper into this land.

The University of Porto remains with ties to the zionist state of Israel and has taken no stance on the ongoing genocide, despite internal protest. Our morals and values are more than labels, and must be inhabited fully with our minds, bodies, and souls. Meaning is to return to words and that is only done through action, and we must demand to be a part of this world, for anything else could under no condition, be appointed “living”. “
