Creating a filtering marine body in Salvador 🌊

Brazil-based artist Licida Vidal (@licida) works across performance, photography, video, and installation to explore questions of gender and nature in the context of climate emergency.

Over recent weeks, Licida has been in residence at @pivosalvador as part of The Ocean’s Edge / Litoral do Limite and Shifting Shores / Instabilidades Costeiras.

During the residency, Licida developed research focused on creating a filtering marine body, using bioremediators capable of capturing pollutants, hosting organisms, and responding to the ocean’s chemical transformations. The work draws on fishing traps, basketry, sieves, ceramics, and scientific data, activating relationships between ancestral practices, technology, and ecology.

Licida’s water-based work forms an immersive body where human gestures meet other forms of life, favouring coexistence over extraction and framing care as a political stance.

At the end of January, the public were invited to encounter Licida’s evolving processes during an Open Studios event at Pivô Boulevard, alongside fellow 'The Ocean's Edge' residency artist Alberta Whittle.

Photography by Lara Perl.

The Ocean’s Edge / Litoral do Limite explores the future of the Brazilian and UK Atlantics with artists Letícia Ramos, Alberta Whittle and Licida Vidal.

The Ocean’s Edge / Litoral do Limite is an international project by Pivô (Brazil) and @Invisible_Dust (UK), in partnership with @TBA21Academy (Spain), with support from the Guimarães Rosa Institute and the British Council, as part of the UK–Brazil Year of Culture 2025–26.

Shifting Shores / Instabilidades Costeiras is co-commissioned by TBA21–Academy, Pivô, and LACO IOUSP, within the S+T+ARTS Buen-TEK programme, co-financed by the European Union.

Announcing the 3rd commission for Sea Change - I’ve learned so much working with @melaniemanchot on this film - I can’t wait to see it finished! Posted @withregram • @invisible_dust One of four new commissions for #SeaChangeATD, @melaniemanchot’s new work 'Flotilla' takes inspiration from the historic women’s protests around the Royal Docks, from the Suffragettes to the Dagenham Ford strikes, and the inequalities with regards to women working on boats.

A cross-generational group of female residents were filmed on a ‘flotilla’ of boats and ships on the night-time waters of the Royal Docks. Standing at the bow, the protagonists become radiantly illuminated by pools of light while the flotilla itself is seen like a procession, gliding through the waters towards the City of London lit up in the distance.

Announcing the second commission for Sea Change by the brilliant @simonfaithfull Posted @withregram • @invisible_dust @simonfaithfull’s ‘Biotopes’ for Sea Change 2023 @yourroyaldocks is a series of public interventions and proposals that visualise our entwined-ness with the rest of ‘nature’ by poetically turning the artist’s own body into a series of habitats for other species. 🍄

A biotope is a micro-habitat, often interlinked with everyday human life – like a local park or pot plant. On a micro-scale our bodies are host to millions of other species.

On a macro-scale our existence on this planet is co-dependent on millions of other beings – that produce the gas we breathe, the food we eat, the materials that we live within.

‘Biotopes’ consists of 3D-prints of the artist’s head that are then adapted to be vessels or niches for other species to reside within, with proposals for other habitats presented as posters. The 3D-prints will be produced by first 3D-scanning the artist’s head in a variety of poses and then 3D-printing the result using fully organic material. The project was developed with input from the People and Nature Lab, UCL and Bermondsey Street Bees.

Thrilled to be working with Raqs Media Collective for this commission - collating the research for this work was a fascinating process ! Posted @withregram • @invisible_dust One of four artistic commissions for Sea Change @yourroyaldocks, ‘The Waves Are Rising’ by @RaqsMediaCollective will feature an animated augmented reality (AR) wave on a large scale LED screen, superimposed upon live video feed video of the still waters of The Royal Docks, filling the vista of the usually calm waterscape with an animated surging wave as well as detritus and data from the high seas.

As fewer people travel by ship now, we are now more divorced from understanding its turbulence and power, which is exacerbated by climate change. The augmented reality wave will reference this untamed nature of the deep sea, the rising seas due to global warming, the waves of capital, trade and immigration brought to the Royal Docks during its history as well as wave patterns in print and fabrics and the wave in art history and popular culture (from Hokusai’s famous ‘Great Wave’ print, to its reproduction as an apple emoji).

🫶🏻We present the first images from the workshop conducted at our foundation's headquarters @alicewsharp Alice Sharp (UK), founder of the art and environment organization @Invisibile Dust, an event made possible through the partnership with @britishcouncil.

📌 The participants explored the connection between art and science in greater detail; they attempted to comprehensively define the main actors of the two fields, the artist, and the scientist, respectively, from the perspective of their possible interaction. Also, based on previously discussed theoretical points, several exercises in mediation design were envisaged and tested.

A very successful and interactive workshop, 🙏🏻 for which we thank our distinguished guest! We also want to thank @metaspatiu to for their presence, intervention and inspiration. #mediation #culturalmediation #education #artencounters #artbiennial

‼️97 percent of homes in the UK are affected by dirty air and exceed WHO limits for at least one of three key pollutants.‼️

In our capital city, 1 in 10 children now has asthma and 9,400 Londoners die prematurely every year due to poor air quality.

🤍Write to your MP and tell them to back Ella's Law to save lives! 🤍

Ella's law would make breathing clean a right for all of our children.

Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah was a bright, talented girl who loved sports, music and reading - but Ella’s life was tragically cut short at aged 9 after she suffered a fatal asthma attack linked to air pollution.

Her incredible mother Rosamund (@ellarobertafamilyfoundation) has fought tirelessly for clean air justice and Ella's Law would make a crucial difference to all our children.

The current government target is to meet the WHO targets for clean air in 2040 - exposing an entire generation of children to unhealthy air!

🤍You can find a link to a template letter to help you write to your MP in the bio. 🤍

🤍Share this post and encourage friends and family to back Ella's Law too. 🤍

Video from @invisible_dust shows artist Dryden Goodwin’s iconic ‘Breathe’ animation of Rosamund 'fighting for breath’ projected large-scale on London’s South Bank in memory of Ella.

If you're by the South Bank or Waterloo from dusk to dawn tonight, pass by our building and look up to see the moving #BreatheforElla by @drydengoodwin. He's created 1300 individual delicate drawings for this tribute.

In memory of @EllaRobertaFdn and in support of #EllasLaw. Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah was a nine year old girl who died of air pollution. Her mother Rosamund has spent the last decade striving for clean air justice for her daughter and all that come after her - and 'Ella's Law' is currently making its ways through the House of Commons.
