Trav G’s Album of the Day

Stan Ipcus - The Working Man is a Sucker
@ippydippy

Stan Ipcus has been around for awhile now, first popping up on my radar during the blog era. Then I lost sight of him, but he popped up again earlier this decade, dropping some singles that grabbed my attention. Then in 2024, he dropped “Sleep if You Want”, a dope hip hop project that was just about mic skills and dope beats. Stan Ipcus is back again, with “The Working Man is a Sucker.”

Stan Ip hits us with his “everyday working man rap” steez, except this time, he’s telling us “the working man is a sucker”, because we’re all going to be laid off and replaced by AI. Okay, maybe that’s not the main theme here, he has plenty of other topics and discussions, but that’s what I took away from it, mainly because I am able to relate. “The Southpaw” and “LFG” were both tracks I had already been familiar with. In fact, I think all these tracks came out in some form or another prior to this “The Working Man is a Sucker” dropping. The title track is classic Stan Ip, there is a deep song with Defcee, “La Life (Revisited)” that might just be the best track on here. There is a plethora of producers, but they all supply a dope boom bap beat. The most diverse track production wise is the Defcee track, it also showcases Stan Ipcus’ ability to come more emotional sounding on his delivery. He’s actually dope with that style as well.

Stan Ipcus isn’t going to create any new style, but that’s not what he’s here to do. He wants to give us quality hip hop, based in the foundations of hip hop, which is dope beats and dope lyrics. “The Working Man is a Sucker” deserves more shine than it probably will get, but enjoy it as it is, just dope hip hop!
