The France de-risking logic ultimately leads to every European nation-state retreating back to itself. This is exactly what the far right wants.

European nations don’t need to de-risk from each other. They need to de-risk from the far right. And the best way to do this is by doing what previous generations of Europeans did: building things.

Foreign policy is not just made in foreign ministries.

Fiscal policy, Germany’s economic model, and the resilience of our democracy increasingly determine whether Germany can act internationally – and how credible that action will be.

At the request of @ipquarterly, @derfuecks, Mark Speich (@onlinekas) and I contribute to a short series on the future of German foreign policy.

It’s not only EU policies—from trade to defense—that are becoming more Gaullist. European voters’ feelings toward the EU are also becoming more French. Column @ipquarterly

In a rapidly evolving global marketplace, the relevance and effectiveness of the WTO as a platform for international trade is being critically examined by our experts Clarissa Schulze-Bahr, Julia Friedlander, Henning Hoff and Jörg Wojahn. During the #GATTC24 they discussed new challenges for the WTO such as novel forms of trade like e-commerce. While organizations such as the WTO adapt to modern demands by developing key regulations, nations including the United States have taken steps such as the Inflation Reduction Act to strengthen their economies - even if it means temporarily stepping back from close economic partnerships. How these developments will play out during and especially after the US elections remains to be seen.

Are you intrigued by the dynamics of transatlantic relations before and after the EU & U.S. Elections? Register for #GATTC24 and join our Fishbowl Discussion as we navigate the complex landscape of the evolving partnerships. The election of Joe Biden brought hopes for revitalization, resulting in temporary solutions on trade issues, data transfer, and digital taxation. The establishment of the EU-U.S. Trade and Technology Council marked a significant collaborative effort. Despite progress, tensions linger, especially concerning differing views on China and expectations for leadership roles.

Looking ahead to 2024, a pivotal year for EU-U.S. relations, renewed pressure surfaces from issues like defense financing for Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas war, economic disparities, and divergent global approaches. As a super election year with both U.S. Presidential and EU Parliament elections, the need for transatlantic guardrails becomes crucial to prevent potential issues and maintain stability. President Biden and President von der Leyen have a unique opportunity to strengthen the foundation for these guardrails, ensuring stability amid increasing challenges and political uncertainty.

In our fishbowl discussion, the audience plays an important and integral role in the discourse. Those interested in actively participating can raise their hands, signaling their desire to join the panel. Once identified by a team member, selected audience members take a seat on the panel, engaging in discussions with other participants for a designated period, limited to 5 minutes.

Explore the threats, impacts of domestic politics, resilience-building, and global cooperation in the transatlantic relationship. Don’t miss out!
