🇬🇧 Church of San Pietro in Piazza Banchi, Genoa

Among the various surprises that the narrow streets of the historic center of Genoa reserve, there is a very special one: the church of San Pietro in Banchi. The most evident peculiarity of this church consists in the fact that it is built over some shops.
There was another, very ancient (it was built long before the year 1000: it seems in 972) that it was called San Pietro della Porta,
in 1398, a clash between different political factions led to the destruction of the church.
In 1572, at the end of a plague that had plagued the city, it was decided to rebuild it, but part of the construction had to be self-financed, so it was decided to complete the church with the funds obtained from the rent of the shops.
