In honor of the reboot of the hit show #adifferentworld id like to share why... I love my HBCU Southern University of Baton Rouge La.
It's because of the contributions of those that graduated before me...My mother and father met at SU and stood side by side as leaders of Students United in 1972. Challenging the administration to bring change to the inadequate funding and living conditions on campus. Their combined efforts brought on some improvements, the first Southern University governing board and encouraged the nation to take a closer look at how to support HBCU's. It inspires me to know I stand on the shoulders of my parents who were catalysts of change during one of the darkest times of American history, what they did made certain my experience was one they could've only dreamed of for me. I owe it to them to Love my Southern University and seek to accomplish greatness!

8.What advice would you give an incoming freshman?

My legacy at Southern University was etched before I knew about the Columbia blue and gold. When my grandmother Clardy Helen Ashton graduated Suma Cum Laude from Southern University in 1956 after not being allowed to enroll at LSU because of the color of her skin. Because of her Legacy I knew my purpose to
1. To do my best
2. To leave my mark.
For me, purpose started the first day I stepped on the yard for some it may take years to find your purpose I'd advise incoming freshman to enjoy every second of pursuing that story of purpose! #takeyourmarksgo

I’m from New Orleans — and if you’re from here, you know that statement hits differently. New Orleans isn’t just a city; it’s a whole vibe. It’s in our accent, our food, our music, our schools, our traditions, and the way we carry ourselves wherever we go.

People might laugh at how we talk or wonder why we still root for our high schools years after graduation. And when someone asks where we’re from, we rarely say “Louisiana” — it’s always New Orleans, like we’re our own little country!

We can leave, explore the world, build new lives… but eventually, we start missing the people, the culture, the sounds, the flavors, the energy — that unique feeling you just can’t find anywhere else.

Sure, there are beautiful places everywhere…

but I’m from New Orleans.
