Within the red chapter of “What Food Asks”, each ingredient gives me a way to follow larger questions through one particular food: how it grows, how it travels, how people have shaped it and how it became personal to me.

Chilli brought me to this question: how does a taste become mine?

I did not grow up with it. Chilli arrived in my life later, in Dubai, through meals in which spice was entirely ordinary. I approached it carefully.

Somewhere through repetition, pain became pleasure, and now food can feel unfinished without heat.

Taste, it turns out, can be practised. Something once foreign can become intimate enough to feel like a preference I have always had.

The body is very persuadable. Mine, apparently, just needed enough chilli :)

The show is what you see on stage.
The people behind it are what make it WhiteCrow.

Hear from our artists about what it feels like to perform, create, and grow with us. 🖤

The ingredient explorations are where “What Food Asks” slows down. Each one is a prompt I give myself: take a food I think I know and go beyond its surface. Learn how it grows, what part of a plant it is, what it needs, who tends and picks it, how it travels, how people have shaped or preserved it, and where my own life happens to meet it.

An ingredient may enter the image through colour. I don’t want its story to end there.

Raspberry is here for a mixture of reasons: I am curious about the way it grows, it belongs to foraging, it carries a personal memory and it is delicious. Each ingredient is a point of entry, chosen because something about it made me want to know more.

The larger questions around food can become huge very quickly. Looking closely at one ingredient gives me a place to begin.

I find it scary to take an idea out of my head and put it into the wild. In my brain, it can stay half-formed, change tomorrow, or make sense only to me. Once I post it, someone can misunderstand it, disagree with it, or ...God knows what else :)

Somehow, putting my body in front of the camera was the easier part.

I am not necessarily eating anything that surrounds me here. I chose to blend in through colour ... to belong, for a moment, to the same red. Maybe that is also what I am doing with these questions: placing myself inside them.
