We came to Richmond for a very personal reason-our son is deploying this weekend. During such a meaningful few days together, we discovered three incredible small businesses that made our time here even more memorable. 🇯🇲 @irietingja HANDS DOWN some of the best Jamaican food we ever tasted! Incredible oxtail, rice & peas, cabbage, mac & cheese, oxtail Mac ‘n cheese egg rolls, & the FRESH coco bread that taste like CLOUD if CLOUD ☁️were a food. What made it truly special was the warmth and hospitality received from Tia and Serena. They both made you feel right at home. Next 🍗 @buttermilkandhoneyrva Unique, delicious and absolutely worth the visit! The Southern Chicken Bowl, mumbo sauce & Chicken & French Toast with caramel maple syrup were AMAZING! Brianna and Davina were gracious, helpful, and genuinely service-driven. Lastly, 🍨 @deeperdive_rva A true small-business GEM! Joseph runs the shop himself and makes everything from scratch, including the ice cream. Creative flavors, a cozy atmosphere and wonderful conversation with the man behind it all. This is exactly the kind of small business I LOVE supporting. Three completely different places with one thing in common: Great food. Genuine hospitality. People who CARE ❤️ Thank you Tia, Serena, Brianna, Davina, and Joseph for adding something special to a weekend our family will never forget ❤️🇺🇸 RICHMOND—you NEED to know these three! #RichmondVA #SupportSmallBusiness #RichmondFood #EatLocal #MiniCupcakes

Black History Month may come in the coldest season, but this month reminded us that even in the hardest conditions, giants rise!

Through experiential learning, our Armstrong Leadership students have once again engaged their minds and their hearts. We competed in Black History Trivia with UR’s REACH Program, and last week, we explored the VMFA’s Giants exhibit.

For our students, representation matters. Seeing the depth, beauty, and variety of Black art and influence affirmed identity, sparked pride, and reminded our students that greatness lives within all of them.

Reflecting on the representation in the exhibit, one of our students said “the exhibit represents beauty, resilience, connection and joy within the Black community. It’s okay to be comfortable in my Black skin.”

Like our Soul Food Café series states, we feed both our minds and our bodies! Thank you to the VMFA for helping us see the giants in all of us, and to Irie Ting for nourishing us with delicious Jamaican Food.

Grateful for the love, learning, and community that makes this work possible.

In Richmond, VA and had to stop by my favorite Jamaican spot 🇯🇲💛 @irietingja
Sipped on refreshing sorrel, devoured flaky chicken patties, spicy jerk chicken wings, savory salmon sliders, and of course… a little taste of that soft, buttery coco bread 🤤

The lunch ambience was just right—relaxed, warm, and full of good energy. Customer service? Super sweet, attentive, and absolutely tip-worthy.

If you love bold flavors and island vibes, this spot is a 10/10 every time.
Richmond really knows how to eat 😌🔥
