for the rest of my life, i get to say that my professional choreography debut was a story with dance in the title. what a gift to be trusted to tell a story with movement infused in every moment. what an even greater gift to have had my first musical choreography experience be with these students, this director, and my fellow creatives at James Madison University. i couldn’t have asked for anything better. thank you for welcoming me with open arms, embracing all my ideas, and dancing your asses off.

At the end of Act 1 of ‘Footloose,’ Ren shows all of his classmates the JOY of dance through a movement language they already know—sports. He uses their understanding of movement to teach groove, dynamics, and storytelling. Soon enough, the whole room explodes into synchronized dancing for the first time in the entire show, showing the unity that movement can create and the power of dance as an agent of change.

Teaching & choreographing at James Madison University has been that same experience for me—meeting students where they are in their artistic journeys and helping them find joy, connection, and passion in movement. Dance, to me, is so much more than tricks, formations, and clean lines… it’s about connection, community, and ohmygodFEELING THE JOY ONLY DANCE CAN BRING!

Thank you, cast, for your trust and for allowing me to try, fail, and try again. Thank you, creative team, for bringing my visions to life and trusting ME with your ideas. Thank you, @jamesmadisonuniversity, for the best two months ever. And thank you, Kate Lumpkin, for literally everything.
