I am so filled with gratitude for life right now. No poetry, no lyric, no essay, just legit what the f*cks at how lucky I am to be staying in the most beautiful house in Laurel Canyon, laughing with my friends and connecting over how incredible it is to make art and love each other.

You know, I always found a bit of melancholy in the idea of a love that lasts. If you fall in love once, hard and fast, is that supposed to be it? You’re done falling in love forever? Or if you do, you’re expected to swallow it down and try to forget about it. I think in some ways, I was coming to resent you. Like loving you had denied me the chance to ever fall in love again.

Until one day, when I felt time brush past us on its way to somewhere else, and I realized I didn’t know you anymore. You were different. You looked the same, even if the clothes had changed, but it was something else. You still laughed at the same jokes, but there was some quality I couldn’t name. It was too big.

I thought it was a betrayal. How could you have done this to me? You were no longer the person I chose. Still, out of loyalty to the person I had known, I stuck it out to see if this newcomer could possibly measure up. And you know what?

They did. They were actually better, in some ways. Lighter. They didn’t hold so tightly to things. I saw more of them without having to pry open some marble-smooth exterior.

Suddenly I couldn’t wait to hear from them. I just wanted to know what they were making, what they were thinking. It was a delight to be surprised. As I gazed at them in wonder, tilting my head to one side and biting my lip, I realized: I think I am falling in love.

So I guess I’ve changed too. I grew, a little. Grateful instead of embittered by this gift you’ve given me.

Thank you for the honor of allowing me to keep all of our history, our context, our perfect moments, alongside the pleasure of falling for you anew.
