I’ve had people asking me why I wear the paint.

Basically, I love wrestling. Sting is my favorite wrestler, and I’ve always been intrigued by wrestlers who wore paint. When I became friends with Sting, I mentioned to him that I was considering wearing paint onstage. He told me what he uses, and it kinda went from there.

I don’t have a specific signature design. I just do whatever I feel like doing that night.

What I didn’t expect was how much the process of putting it on would affect the way I approach playing shows. It helps me focus. It makes me take a moment to actually think about what we’re about to do instead of just going through the motions.

It’s easy to put the paint on when you’re playing in front of a thousand people. It’s the nights when there are 10 people there that it almost seems to matter more. It reminds me to approach both shows the same way.

The less glamorous part is that we tour in a van and I don’t always have somewhere to wash it off afterward. I’ve washed my face in truck stop and restaurant bathrooms plenty of times. Usually that means I still have paint around my eyes, in my sinuses, or just enough left over that it looks like I’m wearing eyeliner even though I genuinely tried to get it all off.

Every once in a while, a venue has a shower and we feel like kings. Although it’s probably best not to think too hard about what has happened in that shower before we got there. But yeah, I respect bands that wear paint, masks, costumes, whatever. I know I’ve said some stuff about it being lame when bands wear full black out paint on their arms and necks… (and before anyone gets their panties in a wad, this is not about a particular band) but it was more so because I want people to be original and know why they’re doing something instead of doing it because it seems to be “the thing” at that moment. But also, doing that every night takes more effort than people probably realize. However, I don’t really consider the paint a costume or a gimmick for me. It’s just become part of how I get myself into the right headspace to perform….

And I love wrestling.

That’s pretty much it. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I was 13 when my brother took me to see P.O.D. for the first time. It was at Magnolia Street Pub in Spartanburg, SC. There was about 200 people there (maybe). The rest of the world found them afterwards when MTV started really showing them love. I would use my lunch money to call every day and vote for them on TRL. I was telling everyone I knew about them. I even had 4 dudes jump me in the hall in high school and take my Chuck Taylor’s that Sonny had signed 😆🫠. When Satellite came out on 9/11, the world didn’t want music that had no hope for a moment. P.O.D. had the aggression that we were feeling as well as hope scattered through it all. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years since this record came out. I feel like P.O.D. has always been misunderstood for the most part by people that thought “this is just rap core” or “this is mainstream”… P.O.D. were in the underground hardcore scene for years grinding it out in a van, sleeping on floors, etc. No matter how much success they’ve received, they are still underrated in my opinion. Since 1992 they’ve been doing this. Through all the fickle trends that have come along, they’ve stayed consistent. I’m grateful to not only call them my friends, but my brothers. 13 year old me would literally have passed out if I told him his band would tour the country with them several times and even be their fill in lead singer. I listened to Satellite this week and it still gives me that same hope in a world that is still struggling with the same issues that this album covered. Much love.

Keep those buns loaded and dawgs at the ready. The final performance of summer initiates this evening. 🔫🌭

From Upheaval to a DIY pool party fest, this sweaty summer has left us with a vivid repository of memories. Tonight, the season terminates in Milwaukee. We’ll be tucking summer into its grave alongside @islander, @shallowsideband, @vapidsoulband, and @irosefromthedeadofficial at the legendary @miramartheatre.

We’re fully fueled (literally and figuratively) thanks to Costco. Time to bring some kickass, Kirkland-powered mayhem to the stage. ⚡️
