POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
For the past year, I’ve been working on something real special, and tomorrow night we finally get to share it with everyone! Women of Libertyville: In Their Own Words started as a storytelling project and has grown into an exhibition filled with personal histories, photographs, memories, and the voices of six incredible senior women. I’ve spent the past year listening to their stories, and it’s been one of my favorite exhibits to curateeee! The project began with an idea storyteller Karrie McDermott had while riding her bike last summer: to preserve the stories of Libertyville’s senior women as we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary. Through her storytelling company, In Their Own Words, Karrie brought this idea to life using @storycorps DIY, bringing women together with friends and family to share their stories through recorded conversations. She organized the interviews and spent countless hours editing the recordings you’ll hear in the galleries. Her vision and dedication to preserving these women’s voices are at the heart of this exhibition, and I’m so grateful she brought the project to the Adler Center! A huge thank you to my bbs at @libertyvillehistory for their partnership, historical knowledge, and generosity. And a special thank you to good pal @isntjeff for his creativity, design support, and collaboration throughout this process. It’s been so rewarding figuring out how to bring these stories to life visually! Above all, thank you to these six women for trusting us with their memories and experiences. Older women’s voices are too often overlooked. These stories deserve to be heard, remembered, and preserved. And if you’ve made it this far, damn, I love you. Now come listen! ❤️ Opening Friday, October 9, 6–8 PM at the Adler Center. Free and open to everyone!
