First, let’s talk about the importance of creating the RIGHT canvas! 🎨
When working with vivid hair colors, what you do BEFORE applying your new shade can be just as important as the color itself.
For this transformation, I wanted to remove the existing lavender pigment while being mindful of the hair’s integrity. That’s where Malibu C DDL (Direct Dye Lifter) came in!

✨Why Malibu C DDL?
DDL is designed specifically to help remove direct dye pigments from the hair. Unlike traditional lighteners, its purpose is to target unwanted artificial color rather than primarily lifting natural pigment.

💧 Why did I mix it with water instead of developer?
Because my goal wasn’t to aggressively lift the hair. I wanted a more controlled approach to removing the existing lavender pigment.
Using DDL with water allows me to work on reducing direct dye buildup without adding the oxidative lifting action associated with developer.
But remember, gentler doesn’t mean damage-free! Hair history, porosity, and integrity still matter, and results can vary depending on the direct dye you’re removing.

🎨 Creating the perfect canvas
Once the lavender was removed to a suitable level, I evaluated the remaining undertones before @isocosmo created our new custom pink formula.

Here’s the thing about vivid coloring: Your canvas doesn’t always need to be perfectly blonde or completely free of pigment. It needs to be the RIGHT canvas for your desired result!

Understanding color theory, residual pigment, and how your new formula will interact with the existing canvas is what makes custom vivid coloring so much fun!
