Every square foot of your spa is real estate, yet most spas only ask the treatment rooms to pay their way. The relaxation lounge sits empty between appointments, the boutique waits for someone to wander past on their way out, and reception is somewhere your clients pass through when it could be somewhere they stay. Those are the areas we pay a lot of attention to in an audit, because they’re already built, already lit and already staffed, so getting them to earn costs far less than adding another treatment room. Social events are one of the easiest ways to do it. Think of a monthly book club in the relaxation lounge, or a craft night in the boutique. Picture a quiet Tuesday evening: twelve guests at $45 each, with a glass of fizz and a hand treatment included, brings in $540 from a space that would otherwise have earned nothing that night. The bigger prize is who walks through the door. Many of those guests will be friends of your regulars who have never booked with you, and they leave having seen the space, met your team and tried your products. If you haven’t looked at what each area of your spa earns per square foot, then this is a sign to do it. If you’d like help turning your quieter spaces into revenue, or a deep dive into your P&L, then get in touch below. Most guests could never tell you exactly what was off in a treatment (just like this one), but they would feel it, and it would stay with them long after they had paid the bill. These are the details we pick up in our forensic spa audits, because they are the ones your clients won’t mention in a review but will hang on to when they decide whether to rebook. Alicia at @renuraskin and I have spent years together in ultra-luxury treatment rooms, so have a proper look and tell us what you spotted. We’ll share the answers in the comments later this week. If you’d like your team trained to catch these moments before your clients do, we run half-day five-star standards workshops for spa teams, so get in touch below. China’s 24-hour bathhouses have turned a spa visit into a whole evening out, and the numbers behind them are hard to ignore. At Tang Yue in Chengdu, 99 yuan, roughly $15, buys a 20-hour pass to eleven floors of pools, saunas, sleep pods, food and entertainment. The treatment is only one part of the visit, and that changes how the business makes its money. Every extra hour a guest stays is another chance for them to eat, drink, book an add-on or come back with friends. Your spa doesn’t need karaoke, but it’s worth asking what your clients do once their treatment ends, and whether that time is earning anything for you. If you’d like help finding the revenue hiding in your guest journey, or want a deep dive into your P&L, then get in touch below. KPMG’s summer Consumer Pulse Survey asked American consumers what matters most to their wellbeing, and the answers show just how differently your guests are thinking. Baby Boomers care most about physical fitness and preventive care, while Gen Z and Millennials put their mental health first. Women are focusing on their sleep more than men are, and 54% of Gen Z have cut back on alcohol altogether. If you average all of that out, you end up marketing to a guest who doesn’t actually exist, and that kind of message rarely lands with anyone. When you know which of these guests is filling your treatment rooms, you can shape your menu, your retail and your campaigns around what your clients genuinely care about, rather than hoping one message works for everyone. If you haven’t segmented your clients already, then this is sign to do it. If you want help with this for marketing, or to deep dive your P&L, then get in touch below. What a week…and a proud moment I’m so grateful to have shared with @themagicofmaking and @mcneeslynne Not just because ASCP, ISPA and PBA have been recognized by ASAE with a Power of Associations Gold Award, but because of what we accomplished together. Our work to advance the Esthetics Licensure Compact is about creating greater mobility for licensed estheticians and making it easier for professionals to build their careers across state lines. It’s also a reminder of what can happen when we put organizational lines aside, work together and focus on the people we’re here to serve. Grateful for this partnership and the many individuals and other groups who support the work, proud of how far we’ve come, and excited to keep the momentum going.

Two years ago, Martha, the spa director at The Lake Estate on Winnisquam, found our wraps at ISPA. 🤍 I wasn’t even there. She picked one up, felt what we feel when we hold them, and reached out to a small handmade brand from New Hampshire. That one message changed everything. Today, every wrap with their name on it is sewn by my hands, for their guests, right here at home. A partnership rooted in comfort, and in the belief that supportive care should feel like being held. Thank you, Martha, for finding us. 🌲

This one means a lot. 🤍 Two years ago, The Lake Estate on Winnisquam discovered Parker Mountain Comfort at #ISPA. Today, our weighted comfort pieces are part of their spa rooms and retail collection created in their signature fabric and embroidered especially for them. There is something incredibly meaningful about seeing what we make become part of how another business cares for its guests. Thank you, The Lake Estate Spa, for believing in Parker Mountain Comfort and trusting us to bring a little more calm, warmth, and comfort to everyone who walks through your doors. This is the kind of partnership a small business dreams about. Handmade with love in New Hampshire.

Ten deep tissue massages in a row. Unless you’ve given them yourself, you can’t know what it takes to survive that day, or what a therapist needs so that the tenth guest receives the same treatment as the first. A consultant who has never worked in a treatment room can tell you how many towels you’ll need, because they’ve modelled it. What they can’t tell you is what that day asks of the person giving the treatments. A spa consultant has to be able to sit across from the financial analyst, the therapist, the general manager and the spa director, and speak each of their languages. You can be taught to understand the spreadsheet, but no spreadsheet can teach you the treatment room. That’s where I started. It’s still where every audit begins. Follow for more wellness content. Korean skincare, and the question underneath it. We have been here before. Around 2015 it arrived as sheet masks and ten-step routines, menus were rewritten around it, and then it left the way novelty always leaves. Caution now is not cynicism. It’s memory. But the numbers this time do not behave like a trend. Eleven point four billion dollars of Korean cosmetic exports last year — second in the world, ahead of the United States, and three-quarters of it skincare. Two million people flew into Korea for treatment, and sixty-three per cent of them went to a dermatology clinic. Not for surgery. For maintenance. Two things sit underneath that, and neither is visible from the shelf. The first is manufacturing. Korean firms do not only supply Korean brands — they develop the formula and sell it on. Some of what is already in your treatment room came out of Seoul under another name. The trend could end tomorrow and the factory would not move. The second is jurisdiction. Salmon DNA is sold as an injectable, as a serum, and as something driven in by needling — one word on the price list, three entirely different molecules, evidence bases and risks. In Korea it is routine. In Britain it is a class three medical device. In America the cream is legal and the injection is not. Your client cannot tell the difference. Your consent form has to. Which is why being asked for something is the weakest evidence available. They asked for the last one too. Three questions are worth interrupting a plan for. Do the results speak for themselves? What is the associated yield? Will the team get behind it? Swipe through. A signature dates. A system does not. Follow for Quick Takeaways — the commercial read on what the industry is already talking about, every week.
