🌎 Protecting children and uniting families across borders

Underpinning all of the principles of Cross-Border Family Solutions is accountability.

Without accountability, systems cannot learn and evolve to better support children and their families. Accountability involves closing existing gaps by improving data collection, information management and reporting systems, so that no child slips through the cracks.

Settling into a new home and family dynamic can take some time, even in kinship arrangements where children already know their carers. The right support at the right time can help families to adjust better and increase long-term stability.

Care arrangements should always be prepared for using a ‘transition plan’, including pre- and post-placement support for children and their carers. Support plans should also account for trauma experienced by children and include services like Life Story Work and mental health support.

Culture and identity are too often sidelined in long-term care planning.

Kinship care is proven to help children feel a stronger sense of belonging than other types of non-parental care. This is because children in kinship care are more closely connected to their ethnic background, cultural traditions, and family history.

Despite this, the benefits of belonging are minimised in care planning, where many overseas family members are not even considered as potential carers despite their connection to the child.

It's time that identity gets the recognition it deserves.

Unconscious biases can have a significant impact on long-term decisions for children's care.

Regretably, misconceptions about other cultures and countries prevent children from being reunited with their relatives overseas.

Principle 4 of Cross-Border Family Solutions ensures that opportunities for children to be raised by their families are not blocked by bias.

In international family cases, it is essential to collaborate with authorities and professionals in other countries, because they best understand local laws and procedures.

This is especially critical for assessments of prospective kinship carers who live overseas. Local professionals can offer a more holistic picture and help social workers understand the unique characteristics of a child within their
family, cultural, religious, ethnic and community context.

Valuing local expertise is the third principle of Cross Border Family Solutions. Follow to discover the remaining 4 principles that should guide your practice.

Care planning for children unable to live with their parents should be equitable, no matter their ethnicity, nationality, or background.

That's why we advocate for international kinship care. More and more children in the UK have relatives living abroad, but they are often excluded from the care planning process. We ensure that these relatives are assessed as potential kinship carers for the children in their family.

By embedding the principle of Equal Opportunity, more children can be cared for by their families, instead of the authorities.

This #KinshipWeek, we're championing seven practical principles to ensure that wherever possible, children are raised by family.

Underpinned by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, Principle 1 states:

It is the child’s right to live in a safe and stable family home environment, for all decisions to emphasise the best interests of the child, and for the child to be afforded the opportunity to maintain their identity and participate in decisions that affect their life, including permanent placement opportunities.

As I enter my 2nd term (4th year) on the board of ISS Canada, I was thrilled to host the Network's 100th birthday party this week.

The event featured inspirational remarks from Senator Wanda Thomas and our Secretary General Jean Ayoub.

The International Social Service (ISS) is an international NGO founded in 1924, following WWI, in order to reunite families.

Today, it has grown into a network of over 120 national entities that assist children and families confronted with displacement or forced migration.

Thank you to the Swiss Embassy, Plan International, UNHCR, GAC, Justice, and Senator Paulette Senior for joining our celebration.

Thank you to the Rideau Club for their incredible service and to my lovely friend @nashabrownridge for sponsoring us.

Shout out to the Capital Cookie Company and the Cake Shoppe for their delicious treats.

Christine, a woman whose journey of self-discovery spanned six decades and three continents, was born and adopted in Australia in the 1950s. Christine sought the assistance of @iss_australia to search for her #origins and reunite with her biological family, who was found in Canada.

Despite the geographical challenges, @iss_australia and @iss_ssicanada worked together to help Christine find her family. Christine found the whereabouts of her mother and brother after 6 decades of undiscovered origins across three continents.

Christine's story is a testament to the power of #family and the invaluable support of ISS in #restoringlinks.
