Skate Park Saturdays are bringing Bloomington-Normal skaters of all ages together through skating, art, and community. The free program at Fairview Park connects local organizations, Illinois State students and faculty, and community members through activities and resources. Jenna Mohammed (@jennajaby), a junior computer science major from Bloomington, chose Illinois State University to stay close to home while finding opportunities to grow and get involved. “ISU gave me the balance of community, opportunity, and involvement I wanted in a college experience,” Mohammed said. She said she was drawn to computer science because it challenges her to think critically and adapt in a constantly evolving field. Mohammed serves as president of the @isa_at_isu, where she creates spaces for students to connect and celebrate culture. She is also a cadet in @isuarmyrotc and involved in @leadilstu, developing her leadership, discipline, and teamwork skills. One of her proudest moments came from organizing the @isuscitech's “Be All You Can Be” competition through ROTC. “Watching departments compete, laugh, push their limits, and come together made all the planning worth it,” she said. Motivated by growth and service, Mohammed said she strives to create meaningful opportunities that bring people together. “Being a Redbird means stepping outside of my comfort zone, leading with intention, and using my experiences to make a positive difference,” she said. For senior Ashley Strehlow, creation takes many forms—writing code, building solutions, and performing under the lights. At Illinois State, she found a way to blend analytical thinking with creativity, from her studies in computer science and computational mathematics to her role in @gammaphicircus. What started as trying something new became a defining part of her college experience, shaping both her confidence and her community. Now, as she prepares for her final performances, it’s not just about the show—it’s about everything that led her there. In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), WGSS will table on Schroeder Plaza on Wednesdays from 11a-2p with Health Promotion and Wellness, SERC, Queer Coalition, Stepping Stones, and more. Drop by our table to learn more about SAAM and how you can be involved in bringing awareness to sexual violence. Day of (No) Silence, April 8: Day of (No) Silence is a nationally recognized day of action created to spread awareness about the impacts of bullying and harassment on LGBTQ+ students. The tabling will prepare you for April 10, when people across the world take a vow to silence to represent the repression of the LGBTQ+ community. (Rain date: April 15) Consent Day, MOVED TO APRIL 29: Campus and local organizations will join to teach about consent and the way it plays a role in our daily lives. Students can receive a SAAM t-shirt from HPW! The Clothesline Project, April 22: The Clothesline Project is an art installation that displays t-shirts made by survivors of IPV. Survivors can create their own shirt to add to the collection. Denim Day, April 29: Denim Day is a worldwide campaign that began after the Italian Supreme Court ruled that because a survivor was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the person who raped her remove them. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the survivor. Wear denim to show your support of survivors of sexual violence. #SAAM #GoYouRedbirds #IllinoisState
