Portrait of A Lady On Fire by Céline Sciamma

Right off the bat, there can be many comparisons between this film and Luca Guadagnino's Call My By Your Name, but that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm here to talk about the immaculate work of cinematography in Celine Sciamma's film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
Simply put, the film is a love story taken place in 1770's France between Marianna, a painter tasked with having to paint her subject, Heloise, without her knowledge. There were two major elements I found that stood out the most whilst I watched this (for the the fourth time). The first one being the lighting and the color, the second being the camera motion and composition. Both of these categories assist one another thus allowing this flick to be the masterpiece that it is.
Firstly, the color theory. From the beginning, we see Marianne in very earthy tones, some yellows, a lot of browns, but for the sake of simplicity, we'll just stick with yellow. That's her color. The once she's introduced to Heloise and this new setting where she'll be staying, she's surrounded in blue tones and shades. It's not difficult at all to see that Heloise's world is blue and Marianne's is yellow. Now to throw in a little spice and make it more interesting instead of it just sounding like I'm throwing random shit out here, I have to spoil the movie a little bit so beware. Later on in the film, Heloise asks Marianne when she realized she was in love with her and Marianne replies by saying the night at the bonfire. Well, at the bonfire, Heloise physically caught on fire while she was wearing a blue dress and the yellow flames of the fire began to mix and it felt as if that was the moment their two worlds really began to collide. The vibrancy of the colors and the subtlety of their meaning really pushes the film's capacity of how much meaning they could put into just over 2 hours of screen time.
Second, the camera movement tend to express the emotions throughout the film. The camera, while solid and still, flows smoothly to follow Marianna and show us her perspective as she navigates as new setting and meeting Heloise. (Cont.)
