In 2007 during my final meeting of the year with my High School counselor, a moment occurred that changed everything. After struggling all semester, It looked as if I was going to pass my classes with decent grades. Grades weren’t finalized, but my counselor called me in to speak about my options after graduation. In her mind, I didn’t have many as she presented the most “sensible path” for me. She said, “With these grades, you should settle for a career in fast food”.  She followed up by saying “Don’t bother with attending college”. That year I graduated with a 2.0 GPA (the bare minimum to graduate high school).

That Fall I enrolled at Chaffey College. Lost, depressed, and defeated, I decided that the first day of class would be my last day of class.

That week I met the great Dr. Donna Colondres. I’m not sure what she saw in me that day, but she made me promise her that I wouldn’t quit and that I would give myself the chance to be great. That was the first time that I felt that I belonged. In time I became BSU President, assisted with establishing one of the first UMOJA student-led higher education conferences in California, exposed hundreds of local students to the option of college, and met friends that became family.

My time spent at this place was not by accident and I believe that everything happens for a reason. If it wasn’t for this community college, I’m not sure how my life would have turned out.

Lastly, shoutout to the great @markvidal for selecting me to be a part of this campaign! I remember telling Mark that even if one student saw me on a billboard and was inspired to attend college, then I’d fulfilled my purpose. Dr. Colondres, while you are no longer with us, I hope you know that I will continue to keep my promise.
