Finished up this drag queen based on @its.miriart ‘s brilliant show-stopping incredible spectacular character concept that she kindly specifically made for me 😭🖤🌈

This project is out of my comfort zone in many different ways… stepped away from fragile feminine silhouettes and pushed for masculine & beefy features. Also tried XGEN for the first time. this is actually my first time working in Maya and I probably will not use it willingly in the future lol, but it feels good to learn new things

Story time friends ☺️

It all started with movie nights. Through those nights Faris started sharing his love for video games and his dream of wanting to create one. Little by little this idea started manifesting into what is now House of Hikmah.

What we were so eager to convey was the richness of where we come from, our heritage, but also Faris’s journey after losing his father الله يرحمه. Such a massive thing to hold… grief. We bonded over our love for visuals and games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Journey and Gris (among sooo manyyyyy 😭) and from there the visual language of this world slowly started forming.

I wanted this world to feel vibrant the way I remembered seeing & feeling the world as a child. Growing up as a nomad, I always loved coming back home. Family gatherings, Makkah & Madinah, the overwhelming awe of the mosques, the geometrical shapes, the calligraphy… everything felt grand, emotional, alive.

As a child my dad used to drive me to school while making me read Arabic books out loud so he could correct my pronunciation 😭 At the time I hated it so much, but now I realize those moments planted seeds in me. Teaching me about the richness of our history and who we are.

And while working on this project, I myself experienced losing my father, Salem Shaheen الله يرحمه. Suddenly this game became much more personal. Maya’s journey started reflecting parts of what I was trying to process within myself. It became cathartic in a way I never expected.

My father was never the biggest fan of my Hollywood work (lolol shoutout to all the ppl that get this 😭) but he understood my intention. This creation… this is one I know would make him smile proudly. We added a falcon in the game to commemorate him (when you play, see if you can find him 🦅)

This game holds such a special place in my heart. Through Maya’s eyes we experience one small part of grief, healing and remembrance.

Forever grateful to the artists that believed in this vision and helped bring it to life. Thank you Faris, Mayar, Elizabeth, Miriam, Ke, Sam, Mehul, Robin, Mehdi, Ruslan, Mounia, Omar, Ina and Andre. So proud to have been part of this creation with you all 💜
