@machineduplicationrecordings showcase ft visuals by the @memphischromacollective at the @crosstownarts green room (thanks @delarajune for all the support over the years) I can’t begin to describe how much this event meant to me. there’s nothing better than throwing out some huge, impossible idea and having my weird little anorak circle of friends absolutely take it and run with it. they work harder than anyone i’ve ever met, and i’m lucky to exist in the same sphere. everyone’s individual brilliance was compounded to form a super megazord of creativity I hadn’t seen since the last @its.whimsyhaus event. how about @overflow.gently_ ‘s multi-diorama apparatus and @magicrorrim ‘s modular controlled system? the fuck. so thoughtful and conceptually moving. @officialkidmaestro and @thelizbot held it down all night with fractalized geometry, and @handicrafts.mp4 & @noahhandmusic brought their live liquid light art and tablet drawings which added a fun, lighthearted feel that made me very happy. the projection-conductor and crux of the operation graham burks of @infinitystairs set up all the scrim, worked out all the tech, and flawlessly navigated the entire night. @carryripple @mdaslband and @general.labor all sounded great (thanks alex) and demonstrated why local labels and artistic communities are worth celebrating, over and over forever. this is some real love of the game shit and nobody deserves the recognition more than @jorty_spice of MDR. also special thanks to @livbcohen for letting us morning zoo crew your radio waves with slide whistles and fog horns, always a good time hanging in the @wyxr_memphis booth. I love every single person in these clips, even the ones in the background. yeah you! look at the art we made. memphismemphismemphis

Shoutout to @memphisaltphotography for capturing last night’s show ⚡️ What a night sharing space with @gong_slayer and @aster.memphis in “Healing Metal.” Gratitude to @its.whimsyhaus for curating the event, and to everyone who came out to listen. 🧡 It’s said that the two instruments that can stop the mind in its tracks are the gong, and the conch. I was happy to share them along with some field recordings I made in India this summer, with flutes by @ias.creations 🕉️

Been thinking a lot of thoughts ahead of Saturday’s @machineduplicationrecordings showcase at @crosstownarts. I don’t think I’ve ever really explained what MDR is to me publicly before, or why I’ve been doing so many different forms of it over the last four years. It’s a tape label, sure, but it’s a lot more than that to me. It all started when I filmed my friend Nick’s last show, mere hours before his passing. That taught me a lot about the importance of documentation, of physical objects, of trying to let art live a life outside of the noise. Read all about it at the link in bio. While you’re there, check out the new Ultimate Memphis Flyering Guide (huge shoutout to @cakeslime for the assist), the show calendar, and a bit about the new charity comp that @heavenlypophitsatx organized.

LIVE ARTIFACT: 01 Twilight Over Channel Lima Music made specifically for this event, preserved after the performance. Twilight Over Channel Lima was a study in time - a summer evening as day turns into night. My part of the experience was just after sunset, before the nocturnal resurgence. I wanted to express the relief, ambiguity, and excitement in that time. The day is cooling, you may be exhausted, but the night is making promises. The first in an ongoing series of live documents. Out now on Bandcamp. Link in bio. #ambient #experimentalmusic #whimsyhaus #memphis

PHOSPHORESCENT FIELD EVENT brilliant concept and artist selection by @its.whimsyhaus , loved every second of this process. v much enjoyed going mad scientist mode on the visuals w @overflow.gently_ & @handicrafts.mp4 CHARGE - @aster.memphis SATURATION - @shakemachinedown BLACKOUT - revenge body ( @thefamilyghost_memphis ) AFTERGLOW - @neon.glittery the theme was phosphorescence, and each musical artist catered their set to the respective phase. for my visual contribution, I projection mapped my giant monstera and used non toxic glow in the dark paint to highlight the veins, but didn’t really get a chance to test whether this would work. I followed the steps using progressively brighter graphics to charge the glow paint for the first two sets into saturation, and by blackout mostly stripped back to variations of a strobe so you could start to see the paint without the light. I leaned on pinks/rainbows for afterglow, and by the end of the night the plant was glowing on its own, demonstrating the concept. such a sick audiovisual/science experiment. everyone keep an eye out for these sorts of events in the future
