I asked David, “What story are you rewriting about your life right now?”

To me, his answer wasn’t really about abandoning ambition, but realizing how much of himself had been organized around it.

Career, goals, progress, and achievement, but then dating surfaced harder questions:

Who are you when work isn’t the subject?
What do you enjoy?
What are you curious about?
What stories do you have that aren’t tied to productivity?

I felt this one.

I'm learning transition isn’t only about changing jobs or roles, but realizing your professional identity has taken up so much space that other parts of you haven’t had the same room to develop.

Self-authorship isn’t only about building a new career, but building a fuller life and I wrote more about this conversation on the Please, BARE With Me site along with David's interview.

Sometimes an interview gives you an answer and other times it gives you a new question to consider.

When I met Katie at Union Station in Los Angeles, I asked:

What is a story you are currently rewriting about your life right now?

Her answer took us to the land.

She spoke about Black farmers, agriculture, the history and economic contribution tied to that work, and her desire for more of us to understand and preserve those stories.

I hear this conversation differently today than I did when I recorded it.

At the time, I was following my curiosity and asking strangers real human questions.

Now, as I more intentionally formalize my interdisciplinary artistic practice after transitioning from my role in education, I can see that these interviews have also been teaching me how I make meaning of my life not just what I create professionally.

I notice what’s happening around me. I pause before forcing a resolution. I interpret what an encounter/experience may be surfacing. I express what is becoming clearer. I encounter another person’s perspective. Then I reconsider what’s possible or what I thought I knew.

And sometimes what is shared changes what I know to look for (or do) next.

Nature has been doing something similar in my life. Walking, gardening, observing cycles, and learning not to demand immediate resolution have helped me reconsider my relationship with pace, progress, and the roles I thought I was supposed to play.

And perhaps that is the role for art and media. These aren't intended to simply tell us who we should be, but to preserve experiences, recover histories, complicate what we think we know, and help us see ourselves and one another more clearly.

Katie unknowingly gave me more than an interview that day.

She gave me another doorway into understanding my own process and next steps in my life's endeavors.

I wrote more about what this conversation taught me about land, storytelling, media, pace, and the way returning to an old conversation (or part of your journey) can reveal something new.

Where do you go when you need to hear yourself more clearly?

That was one of the questions @elgabesanchez navigatee during this Please, BARE With Me field conversation.

His answer included vocal rooms, movement, performance and creativity, practices that help him clear his mind, move what doesn't need to stay in his body and reconnect with himself.

It made me think about my answer too.

Mine includes nature, movement, solitude, but also people. I make sense of a lot of life through honest conversation with others (even if I don't know them)!

There is something about sitting (or apparently standing on a sidewalk) with another human and asking a real question that gives both people permission to hear, feel, and see themselves differently.

That's one of the takeaways I'm learning as I formalize my artistic practice. Conversation isn't simply something I do before ‘the art’ happens. Conversation IS the material for me.

The street is the studio, the participant is a co-creator, and the answers can change both the guest and the interviewer too.

This is what I meant in my recent (pinned📌) post: Recognizing the Art in How I Had Always Worked.

The people, places, practices and environments around us can either make it easier to hear (and be) ourselves or train us to override ourselves.

So I'll leave Gabriel's question with you:

Where do you go or what practices do you engage in when you need to hear, feel, or see yourself more clearly? And what tends to surface when you finally get quiet enough to listen?

We talk a lot about what founders are building, but not nearly enough about the body doing the building.

I don't drink coffee, so when I need to wake myself up, a reset between calls, step away from the computer or shift my energy after sitting for too long, I move.

Every morning and most evenings, that looks like walking. Some days it's rowing and sometimes it's simply a little patch of grass, a few trees and ten movements I've come to use as a reset.

It doesn't take much time and it's enough movement to help me feel warmer, looser, more awake and back inside my body.

I'm learning that founder sustainability isn't only about strategy, capital, productivity or getting the next idea out into the world.

There is also a human being carrying all of that. Our mind is constantly making decisions, our nervous system is absorbing uncertainty, our spirit is searching for meaning, and our body is quite literally carrying us from one room, conversation, opportunity and season to the next.

Sometimes I do this before rowing or strength training. Sometimes first thing in the morning. Sometimes in the middle of a workday when I've been staring at a screen for too long.

I think of it less as a workout and more as recalibration. This is one version of my Founder Reset.

What helps you come back to yourself when your brain has been working overtime?

Today we linked up to go over all the details for our mixer happening next month! 🙌

(This will be going down at @cmactv)

This event is all about bringing content creators and business owners together to connect, learn, and grow. We had some really good conversations today, and @its_msmarisha definitely had us thinking 😂 She really picked our brains!

I’m excited about what we’re putting together, and I truly believe it’s going to be a great turnout. I can’t wait to share more details with you all soon! 🤍

Ps. If you’re a business owner and would like to set up a booth message me. (FYI, this is not a Vendor pop-up opportunity.)

Building rooms and community has been something that’s been on my heart for a long time, but for years I never felt “qualified” because I was “just” a photographer.

Then I realized I was never just a photographer.

I’m a multi-published international photographer who has had the privilege of documenting stories, businesses, retreats, events, and life-changing moments. But beyond the camera, I’m also someone who has rebuilt her life and her business from the ground up more than once. And every single version of myself has come with lessons that have helped other women see something different in themselves, their businesses, or the way they’re moving through life.

I’ve been in every kind of room. Small networking events. Large conferences. Corporate trainings. Chamber events. Independent communities. I’ve experienced what feels transactional, what feels performative, and what feels like coming home.

And I also learned that not every room is meant for every woman.

So I stopped trying to build what everyone else was building and started creating the kind of rooms I wished existed.

Watching women walk into those spaces as strangers and leave with genuine relationships, collaborations, confidence, and a reminder of who they are is something I could have only imagined five years ago. Even one year ago.

Now I get to be the connector.

Not because I have all the answers, but because I know what it’s like to need someone to believe in you, introduce you to the right person, or simply remind you that you belong in the room.

Photography gave me the opportunity to tell stories. Community has given me the opportunity to help women write new ones.

That’s the legacy I’m building.

And somehow… I get to build it alongside all of you. 💜 comment LEGACY to join us inside the legacy@edit membership, and be part of the community.

My heart is so full 💜 Thank you everyone of you who came and showed up for yourself. Your business. Your legacy.

Stepping outside your comfort zone and putting yourself out there is scary. But I promise you will NEVER regret being in the rooms.

Women who had never met before met, shared stories about life and business. Women who showed up knowing no one…. Left with new friends.

Women left inspired and ready to make moves.

This is why rooms like this matter. This is what conversations like these matter. And this is exactly why I’m so passionate about community and doing the big scary things.

If you’re ready to start showing up for yourself and be in the rooms with like minded women, comment LEGACY to join the waitlist for the next Legacy Edit Live.
