Where do I begin… back in June 2025 , my childhood bestfriend got married!!!! And when she asked me to be a bridesmaid I was literally so excited and in tears, like omg “of course” is what I said. Like she didn’t have to ask me twice , okay. Then on top of that it was a destination wedding… in EGYPT!!! Like what?? My friend had the most beautiful wedding in EGYPT!!!! I was blessed beyond measures to have experienced this with Shushu and the family!!!❤️❤️ that’s what you call a friend okay, they looked after me and took care of me while I was there, and it was so beautiful. To my longtime friend Shukran, thank you for that experience and for allowing me to be apart of your beautiful moment. I wish you and Victor a long , healthy, blessed, and beautiful life together inshallah🤲🏾🩷 . So happy for the both of you, and you and the family will always have a special place in my heart. LOVE YALL💯❤️
P.S and oh not too much on our throwback picture😂 okay we came a long way since middle school out Howard County!!!😂💯❤️🤞🏾🤞🏾

APRIL SNAPSHOTS 🌷🌿🌱

As we prepare for a new month, we look back at all the good April brought to our Scholar community. Here are 7 highlights from some of our esteemed community members, brought to you by the Scholars themselves! 📸

1. Our wonderful Paula-Peace James-Okoro (@paula_james) at the Keystone Symposia on the “Neurobiology of Ingestive Behaviour” in Pacific Grove, California. At this conference, James-Okoro presented her research on the “Central Mechanisms of GIP-Mediated Food Intake Regulation”, which focuses on how the gut hormone GIP influences appetite — significant work given the rise of GIP-based therapies like Tirzepatide or Mounjaro for obesity and diabetes.
2. Two-time Gates Cambridge Scholar Aneisa Babkir (@itsaneisa) speaking with Dr. Jeffery Watumull at the launch of the Gates Cambridge Speaking Series, co-founded by Babkir and the Gates Trust. The series brings in speakers across fields—from Anthronoetic AI to international development and revolutionary art—designed to spark critical dialogue and social impact.
3. Ignacio (Nacho) Perez (@nach_per) presenting his research on DNA at the Biophysical Society Annual Conference in Los Angeles, an event that connects leading scientists from all over the world who work at the interface of the life, physical, and computational sciences.
4. Memories by Jannis Jakobs (@jannis.j.j) of Scholars on a walk to Coton, a scenic village west of Cambridge. The walk was organized by Jannis himself, our amazing Community Officer, for Scholars and friends!
5. Scholars Madalyn Grant, Nacho Perez, Tomás Tancredi, Damni Kain, and Vinicius Alexandre Fortes De Barros spending quality time together at King’s College.
6. @paula_james enjoying the beautiful scenery at Yosemite Falls! Of the trip, James-Okoro says, “Beyond the conference, I explored the stunning landscapes of California, including the breathtaking Yosemite Falls. I’m deeply grateful to the Gates Cambridge Trust for supporting this experience through the Academic Development Fund!”
7. @paula_james in Yosemite!

Council President with the Gala Committee and guests at the 2024 Gates Gala, at the magnificent Madingley Hall.

Many thanks to the Gala organising committee for the fantastic work! The Inclusion and Accessibility Officer of the committee was missing on the night, but her work was much appreciated...

We'll share more photos of the evening in the next posts! 🥳
