I want to coin a new term. Rundown luxury.

You know quiet luxury — understated, expensive, refined. Rundown luxury is what happens when the most beautiful cities in the world stop being maintained. Buildings deteriorating. Streets dirty. Infrastructure crumbling. But the price tag never moved. Paying luxury prices for a rundown experience and nobody in charge notices.

LA is the global capital right now. Most valuable real estate on earth, significant percentage living on the street, and the politicians keep getting reelected. New York trending the same way. London too. The pattern is consistent and the policy responsible is identical in every case.

The part that gets me:

• Rundown luxury happens when policy prioritizes ideology over maintenance — the city pays and the residents pay twice.
• The people who can leave are leaving. The ones who stay are paying more for less every year.
• Quiet luxury is an aesthetic. Rundown luxury is a policy failure. Someone had to say it.
