POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Six years ago, our editor wrote about a fifteen-year-old breaking into Birmingham City's first team. This week, we close out the story — the chapter that turned "promising teenager" into a name people stopped needing to explain.

Opening day at the Bernabéu, and he scores on debut. By season's end: a LaLiga and Champions League double, nineteen non-penalty goals, a shoulder dislocated mid-season that he simply refused to let stop him. A Champions League final against the club that raised him. A Euro final lost the same summer, same shoulder, still unrepaired.

Then the version everyone forgets — the season Mbappé's arrival pushed him out of the role that made him. A twelve-game goalless run. An emergency cameo at right-back. Surgery finally, two years too late, missing the start of a season for the first time in his career.

And now, three managers in one campaign — Xabi Alonso gone by January, Arbeloa gone by June, Mourinho back at the Bernabéu thirteen years after he first left it. Bellingham, still finding his footing under a fourth different system in as many years, still the same player underneath it.

This is the version you don't get from a highlights reel — the cost behind the medals, before the headlines caught up.

@itsallign carries the numbers next. Same years, the other lens.

Six years ago, our editor wrote about a teenager breaking into Birmingham City’s first team in the Championship. This week, we go back to him.

Jude Bellingham has gone from a sixteen-year-old holding his own in the second tier to a Champions League winner, a Real Madrid mainstay, and one of the defining midfielders of his generation. That’s the story we want to tell properly, not as a quick stat update, but as an actual account of how someone gets from there to here.

We’re splitting the telling in two. @itsdottedmedia will carry the words, the context, the moments that mattered, the version of this story you can’t get from a highlights reel.

@itsallign will carry the numbers, running his performance through our VEI model to show, season by season, exactly how his output has developed over that time.

Same player, same six years, two different lenses. First deposit, revisited.

VEI scores every player 0 to 10, against real peers only — same position, same league, same season. Here’s what six years of it shows about Eze.

His first two Palace seasons sit below average — a young winger finding his level, then a season cut short by injury. Then the turn: the Hodgson resurgence crosses above average for the first time, followed by his genuine peak the year after, elite in front of goal and elite on the ball.

Then the strangest chapter. The FA Cup-winning season actually scores below average — not because the attacking numbers dropped, but because his defensive output hit its lowest point of any season measured, even as the trophy cabinet filled up.

Arsenal’s still being written. One thing hasn’t changed across all six years: his defensive number has never once crossed above average, at either club.

As we’re going to be analysing 100s of players on this page, we thought we’d take a minute to explain the model behind the numbers.

VEI scores every player 0 to 10, built the same way for everyone — compared only to their real peers, same position, same league, same season. Not legends. Not reputation. Just who they’re actually playing against.

5 is dead average. Below 4.5, behind the pack that year. Above 6.5, one of the best in the group. Above 7.5, the kind of season people are still talking about a decade later. Nobody really touches 10 — that’s peak Messi air.

This is the scale everything on this page runs on. Worth knowing before the rest of it means anything.

He was released by this club at thirteen. Fourteen years later, he called the manager himself — before Tottenham could finish signing him — just to ask if the door was still open.

It was. £60 million. The number 10. The same age Ian Wright was, walking the exact same road home.

He wasn’t even registered in time to play the day they announced him. Watched his own unveiling from the stands.

Then it started writing itself. First goal in the League Cup. First Premier League goal against the club that raised him. A hat-trick against Tottenham in November — the first North London derby hat-trick the Premier League has ever seen. Two more in February. Five derby goals in one season. Nobody’s done that since the 1930s.

A first Champions League goal in March. Then the final in May, against PSG — and in the shootout, the same shadow that found him at the Community Shield found him again.

One trophy short of the story he was writing. Still writing it.

Five years. One club that turned a £17m gamble into the best story South London had. An Achilles that nearly ended it before it started. A goal disallowed by half a second on opening day, and a referee apologising for it after.

Then the season that outweighs every other one — top scorer, ever-present, the boy who couldn’t score eighteen months earlier turning into the one the whole team leaned on.

An FA Cup final winner. First trophy in 119 years. A Community Shield three months later, and a missed penalty that nobody could’ve known would echo.

Then the ending, the way endings sometimes go — messy, half-finished, a goodbye match he never got to play.

Palace gave him the shirt Ian Wright wore. He spent five years proving he deserved it.

PSR is dead. The financial rules that sent Everton into a points deduction spiral are being scrapped. From next season the Premier League runs on an entirely new system — and it changes everything.

Squad Cost Ratio limits clubs to spending 85% of their football revenue on players, wages and agent fees. You know your limit before the season starts. Go above the Red Threshold and you get a points deduction — six points minimum, in the same season the breach happens. No more waiting years for a verdict.

And then there’s SSR — three financial health tests every July. Can you survive the season right now? Can you survive relegation? Is your long-term debt sustainable? Fail one and you need a business plan. Ignore it and the Premier League steps in directly.

Manchester City’s case has dragged on for years. Everton got docked points after the fact. West Ham are bleeding cash with no real-time intervention. The old system was slow, inconsistent and easy to game.
The new system monitors in-season. Enforces in real time. Hits you in the same year you breach. English football’s financial governance is changing. Whether it actually works — we find out from 2026/27. 👀

Let’s Talk About Vini Jr…

In a world where racists pray silence will break you, Vinicius Junior responds with goals and dancing—because sometimes the best revenge is joy wrapped in clinical finishing. Watch him collect that Camavinga pass, burst into Benfica’s box, and slot home with his right foot. That’s not just a goal; that’s a middle finger to hate, delivered in football’s purest language.

2-1 on the night. 3-1 on aggregate. Benfica’s hopes buried in the Bernabéu turf. But the finish was just the opening act—the real message came in that sprint to the corner flag, launching into the exact same dance that made Lisbon lose its mind a week ago. The same celebration that triggered abuse, objects hurled from stands, and Gianluca Prestianni allegedly hiding racist slurs behind his shirt. Vini’s response? Do it again, louder, with more feeling.

His movement? Pure defiance choreographed in rhythm. While UEFA handed out their provisional one-match suspension and launched their investigations, Vinicius was preparing his real statement—not in press conferences or social media posts, but in goals and celebrations that refuse to be dimmed by hatred.
From Lisbon chaos to Bernabéu vindication—this is Vinicius dancing through the darkness. That celebration wasn’t just joy; it was resistance, a 25-year-old Brazilian telling every racist in every stadium that their hatred won’t steal his happiness. Now, as Real Madrid march into the next round, Vini isn’t just playing football—he’s teaching a masterclass in resilience wrapped in samba steps.

One goal tells the story of quality. That dance tells the story of character. But it’s those moments, those flashes of pure unbreakable spirit lighting up European nights, that remind us why some players don’t just score goals—they score victories for everyone who’s ever been told to stay quiet, stay small, stop celebrating who they are.

They wanted to silence his joy. He gave them an encore.

THE NUMBERS SAY..

Chelsea have been one of the most frustrating teams to watch this season — and the data explains exactly why.

They’re not underperforming. They’re just doing it in the wrong windows.

+8.08 xG differential between 46–60 mins. Best attacking window in their squad. Then 9 goals conceded after the 76th. More than any other period. And they’re losing games with 71% possession.

The numbers say Chelsea aren’t a bad team. They’re a team that plays like the game ends at 75 minutes.

Swipe to see it broken down. 👇

‘THE NUMBERS SAY’…

Everyone debates when forwards peak. 27? 28? We went and checked. 206 players. 12 seasons of premier league data. The answer is 22. Not because players get worse after that — the plateau is real, elite forwards sustain output deep into their 30s. But the ceiling? that gets set early.

‘THE NUMBERS SAY..’

📈 Brentford are 16 points clear of relegation — safe by any serious measure. Compared to last season, they’re +4 points better off, turning draws into wins and distance into security.

📉 Liverpool tell the opposite story. After 25 games, they’re 21 points worse than last season. Same league, same squad core — completely different level. One of the poorest title defences the Premier League has seen.

⚠️ Newcastle sit 12th for a reason. When they go 1–0 up, control disappears. 10 goals conceded from one-goal leads, 3rd worst in the league. Game state is killing them.
Different teams. Different problems.
Same truth: league position is earned in the margins.
