That’s a wrap on 2023. Reflecting on it is a bit odd.

High highs and low lows, it was a real mixed bag. A bag mostly mixed with cacca. The top layer being the worst financial year in a long time. A very long time. Personally and as a business owner, there were moments of flying a little too close to sun. Advertising budgets had a lull, tech hiccuped, and Hollywood went on strike. Forced to shut down our New York stage and months without any work. Burning through a savings account that I just started to get familiar with. Naturally much of 2023 involved cursing at every project that slipped through the cracks. Lots of days resenting the film industry. But alas- hold tight, let go easy.

As a silver lining those gloomy months birthed the drive to finally make a feature film instead of always pitching one. It felt good to take the cacca and make something with it. To be “happy as a pig in shit” as my parents say. So came diving into the beautiful, raw, personal world of someone I really look up to. Borrowing equipment and filming alongside my closest friends as we drank aperol spritz on-set. The line between “work” and “pleasure” has never been defined to me. So maybe disconnecting from “the industry” is what people like me should embrace (don’t quote me on that since I still have to pay rent). But I learned I enjoy Italy enough to go 3 times in one year… and still yearn for more. Grazie Dio.

With that, the highs. Premiering a film at SXSW with friends and family and selling out every screening. A year as a fiancé and appreciating every moment of it. Attending friends weddings that were as fun, if not more fun, than the movies. Literally flying around the world. Adventures that range from having a rental car break down in the desolate Icelandic countryside, to slamming a bottle of sake and bowl of clam soup in the Seoul airport just before a 14-hour flight.

Maybe the question is, what does a year like this mean to me? I have no idea. Not a clue. Only time will tell how it contributes to the baggage.

But show me your friends, and I’ll show you who you are.
