Ramblings on slowing down, rest, gratitude…

Some slow moments.

”The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.“ - Alan Watts.

Securing tenancy as a barrister was such a huge milestone - but I automatically carried on without acknowledging it. I realise that, as a care-experienced woman, my nervous system registers success as survival. I move to the next step at 100mph. The lyrics from Hamilton “you’ll never be satisfied” struck me. I don’t want to feel this way, which is why slowing down is vital - we remember what we already have.

The last 2 weeks I have taken a break to properly rest. This has been so hard for me to do. Every fibre of my being screams “do something productive!!” Being, rather than doing, is not natural to me. But what I realised was profound: I have already achieved everything I dreamed of at 16. My real dream all along was to create the safe and loving family that I never had. Anything else is a bonus.

I couldn’t be more grateful to my family, particularly Greg, my rock, and our darling son - a living reminder of my greatest purpose. My auntie and uncle who chose to treat me like a daughter at 18 when I felt clueless. To my close friends who taught me how to love myself (luv 4 u in these pics). And to the family I’ve built through @lawyerswhocare 🤍

I feel the next era of my development is rooted in peace (as much as humanly possible as a barrister lol) - learning what peace feels like in my body, learning to sit still, learning to be content.

I do not become any less ambitious by re-setting the pace - I’m just reorienting what it means to be whole.

The real dream was (is) my son…and what an absolute freaking honour it is to be his mum.

A reminder for my care-experienced high achievers that you are no less amazing if you slow down (even to 60mph not 100mph…):

“Look at where you are. Look at where you started. The fact that you’re alive is a miracle. Just stay alive - that would be enough.” (Hamilton)

You’ve already made 16-year-old you proud 🤍

We’re hosting a Pop-Up Exhibition at The Wrong Gallery!
✨ Opening Party: Monday 8 September, 6:30–9pm ✨
Curated by @itshimbutthey — delighted to welcome back @zyfotos2

Other Worlds

Other Worlds brings together artists who imagine alternatives to the realities we inhabit today. In an era marked by rising far-right politics, ecological crisis, and the ongoing erasure of queer and marginalised identities, the exhibition asks: how might art open portals to different futures?
