alt-pride fest year 2 was nothing like we imagined, but somehow everything it was meant to be.

behind the scenes, things fell apart and came back together about a hundred different ways. nothing went exactly to plan. and still? this was one of the most beautiful, radical, healing nights we've ever built.

because rage isn't just about anger. it's grief. it's joy. it's screaming and crying and laughing in the same breath. it's every person on that stage getting to just be... messy, loud, soft, furious, alive.

strut, slut! was the beginning of this. alt together: we rage was the moment. now we rest.

this was the final strut, slut!... for now. we're stepping back, reimagining, and we'll be back with something like you've never seen before. a new era is coming.👀

thank you for showing up, for raging with us, for being the reason this mattered.

from one nasty queer to another, we love you. we see you. we hear you. and this is FAR from the end.🫶🖤

☆huge congrats to our June Strut Slut! winner @lipslikelepore 🎉🎊

It doesn’t feel weird to showcase a show I didn’t go to. It does feel off to be dire in Pride. This month gave me many revelations, most of them negative, about the division in not just our country, but our community. I was exposed to a variety of new terms: the Pick me gays, the “normal” gays, the MTGA (make tomboys great again), the LBG no T crowd, and some I knew were lurking, but had no idea how many. It brought it down. It soured the mood. It forced me to look at how we live now and try to comprehend what’s going on. But the more u overthink, the less u know. The less u know, the less u feel. I’ve been numb. It’s difficult to smile when u r told to, and during Pride we r supposed to be joyous. But a part of me felt that instead of crying “Love wins” we should be yelling “we r in danger”. Everything is not okay. The fact we were able to celebrate in the midst of hate is reason to celebrate in itself, but I guess I look at June and expect everything to heal by July. It’s not happening. So rather than going out, I stayed in. Delusion, dismay, call it whatever. Pride didn’t feel like Pride. So it came to a burst when I was able to go to the Alt-Pride fest in Durham this weekend. I wanted to rave. But a weird thing happened, and maybe it came as a result of longing from having to view from afar. Sorting all the media from this fest sparked something in me. Not a world changing shift, but the need to go back out. Joy can come from raving & rage can melt to pride. Seeing all the performers lifted me in a way I haven’t felt all month. It isn’t hope, but a different kind of light. One that can only shine from certain souls. So I document this in blurry, borrowed images from a place I wasn’t at, but felt. It isn’t the same as being there, but if a vibe burns, it’s done its job. Apologies to @_kaiology & @5piritberry for stealing their photos! 😞

Sacred. Sacrilege. It’s one in the same. Religion & Faith r 2 different things entirely. Most of us have had encounters with both at some times. After we receive its grace, we come away scorched. Some of us still have scars. Some won’t heal. But it’s in the dark that light can exist. In a filthy neon spark we see it burn with a million eyes. I was raised Baptist & Catholic, baptized Episcopalian with a father who was an atheist. The secular had so many faces, I nearly walked out. But a shelter can be a church. An alley can be a cathedral. And a drag show can be a sermon. Saturday I was scandalized, but there was a bit of me that thought Christ would have gotten a kick out of it. There were so many performers, I don’t know where to begin. Congratulations to our May Slut: @catharsismortem. It was great to see u perform after wondering for a time “just who is this being?”. And of our heavenly demons, @mx_creant, @offaljack, & @backstitchtheclown, who made the top 4. To @vespermelancholy, who wore divine leather, and @itsjanewarwickbabe, whose performances r a spiritual experience. @king_gerard_gay (‘nuff said), @dykey_way (bah) @damotherinc (class itself), @bohemianclapstitty (smiling down hate), @beaunwitte (that was a fake knife…right?), @koeeofkanekalon (💗), @nebulathequeen (she of the red eyed gaze), @lipslikelepore (so nice to have met u!), @kingclinttorris (taking me to Catholic school), @missholi_heshii (Happy 🐰!), @sarah_tune_in (horny), and a cast that was 🔥. Heaven is what u make of it. Hell is man made. There’s truth in every slut and every angel preaching in a puss stained alley. They can damn us, but we’ll just end up saving ourselves. Amen. Amen.
