This year, our administrative team intentionally began the school year with a leadership retreat, taking time to reflect, collaborate, and strengthen the foundation of our team. Through meaningful session, team-building activities, and guided reflection, we explored what it means to lead with purpose, build trust and friendship, and continue growing together. Alhamdulillah, our school’s administrators wrapped up our Leadership Retreat where we spent two days at the Philip Merrill Environmental Center intentionally reflecting, planning and strengthening the schools shared vision for the upcoming academic year. Our team was joined by @forerunnersnetwork, to help us engage in meaningful discussions and collaborate on strategic goals. Administrators are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to a year of growth, leadership and barakah insha’Allah. Ustadh Kareem Elsayed gives the Friday Sermon (Khutbah) at the Muslim Community Center - East Bay (MCC East Bay) in Pleasanton, California on June 12, 2026. Civic Responsibility and Divine Accountability - Allah punished the Sabbath-breakers who fished on Fridays to collect on Saturdays, but rescued those who advised against evil while lumping the silent complainers with the wrongdoers for not standing up for justice, demonstrating that witnessing transgression without action brings collective punishment. - The Prophet instructed to give victory to the oppressor by preventing them from oppressing others, establishing that justice requires both preventing harm and bringing benefit, with the most beloved to Allah being those most beneficial to people—valued above a month of mosque seclusion. - Iman has over 60 branches, with the highest being La ilaha illallah and the lowest being removing harmful objects from the road, proving that eliminating harm is a fundamental branch of faith requiring action at every level. Historical Models of Islamic Governance - The Prophet witnessed a pact of justice among Quraysh leaders to back wronged parties, declaring it more beloved than expensive red camels (equivalent to Lamborghinis), and affirmed he would enter such agreements with non-Muslims in Islamic times for justice. - Omar ibn al-Khattab, ranked 52nd most influential person by historian Michael Hart, established the Hijri calendar, Bait al-Mal welfare system, built infrastructure (roads, bridges, canals), created planned cities (Basra, Kufa), and implemented judicial independence, term limits, and audits. Strategic Civic Engagement - Civic engagement operates on escalating levels: protest, petitions, voting, calling officials, public meetings, private meetings, boards/commissions (planning, youth, police, parks, arts), running for office, and enabling others—with the Prophet prescribing change through hands, tongue, or heart (weakest). - Boards and commissions (distinct from city council) perform substantial government work with positions often unfilled and begging for candidates, offering Muslims immediate opportunities to fulfill civic duties and establish just
