Welcome back to the Brooklyn Academy of Music annual Dance Africa Bazaar featuring more than 150 vendors from around the world, offering African, Caribbean, and African-American food, crafts, and fashion.

🌱This year Big Reuse had the incredible opportunity to hand out free compost and discuss it’s relevance and importance historically and in our current local communities. The rain hit us hard but we will be back with smiles and compost today from 12pm-6pm in front of the BAM Fisher Building!

Plant sunflowers in the streets on 5/1 - International Sunflower Guerrilla Gardening Day, a day of collective action to sow seeds in neglected parts of our neighborhoods.

1. Pick up some free sunflower seeds from community gardens and community spaces like @resistance_is_fertile @smilinghogsheadranch. There is a seed variety per borough, and organizers have been distributing seeds with @greenguerillas and @greenthumbnyc. There is a map of gardens on the @greenguerillas website. Seeds will be available in the library at @laguardiacc and @antilleanroutes is distributing to students. @foodbabysoul has seeds to share on Starr Street and @nonbkpipeline is bringing seeds to the @maydayspace Day of Resistance on 5/1. Members of my @farmschool_nyc downtown cohort are planting in their neighborhoods. I’d love to get them uptown. @theconnectedchef will have seeds at their farm stand this weekend.

But use whatever you have or check out a seed library! Your neighborhood community garden may have saved seeds to share. I also discovered that @nypl @bklynlibrary have seed libraries, and it seems @qplnyc is working on one too.

2. You don’t need space to plant sunflowers. Look for vacant or abandoned lots, tree pits, sidewalks or areas that aren’t cared for.

3. Plant seeds in your borough. Then, venture out and plant your borough's variety across other boroughs.

4. Take photos while you plant & where you plant. Share, tag, and follow #ISGGD and #SeedtheCity to see people celebrating across the city!

Collectively, we can make beautiful spaces for ourselves & our neighbors. We can offer food to bees & birds. We can share vital plant matter with the Earth.

We can assert our rights to care for and show up in our public, common spaces.

To learn more check out @greenguerillas rillas and find a link for more information in their linktree.

A New Grow Space at Springfield Gardens High School in Queens, NY. and our largest build yet!!!

🌱After almost a year of planning, the build is almost complete. With the seed from Dr. Charles, the support of Blaque Resource Network and Diana of Sovereign Markets, we were able to secure a nearly $4000 materials grant from Home Depot and build the school 10 raised garden beds for new agriculture led education and courses in their underutilized courtyard space. Special thanks to all the parents and youth volunteers who offered their time, smiles, and knowledge. The future is so much brighter because of them!

“It’s because I’m Black and of Caribbean descent that I’m a farmer. It’s because I’m queer that I undetrstand the queerness of the Earth. If we understand the powers that we already have, that’s instilled in us, then we could really be powerful not only in the food justice movement, but in community development.”
