Speaker highlights from last Friday evening’s Fashion Tech Week event.

This room was filled with conversations on sustainability, design, tech, luxury, and regulation.

Our panel conversations highlighted sustainable business models, changing work environments at brands, regulations brands need to prepare for and what it means to balance creativity and business skills.

Thanks so much to The Lasko Company and Métier PLM for bringing this event to life.

Meet The Speakers!

Excited to have Tara Maurice join us at The Fashion Tech Week Conference speaking on the panel “What Happens to Fashion After it Doesn’t Sell”

Tara Maurice is a Design Strategist and Professor of Design, Systems and Environmental Ethics, working to transform how fashion how fashion is created and produced to accelerate decarbonization. Her work spans circular design R&D, the creation of new business models, and design strategy at Coach, and an academic practice focused on training the next generation of designers with the knowledge, methodology, and agency to rethink fashion from its origin in the hands of design.

It’s another Mending Lab. It’s been a while since we hosted the first one in 2019, but an amazing space came up. Special events and activities will be announced shortly. Follow @itsprettyuglyofficial for the updates. #upcycledfashion #nycevents #popup #crafting #circularity

Make your own snow day (on our packaging, that is). 🌨️ Coachtopia employee @itsprettyuglyofficial uses glitter and aluminum to add seasonal shimmer to one of our boxes. 🤍

Did you know up to 43% more waste is created during the holidays than at any other time of the year? It’s one reason why this season (and every season) we’re reimagining scraps and leftover materials, transforming them into beautiful things. So have a Wasty Holiday—help us build a brighter future for fashion.

The tenth and last #sustainabledesignstrategy from the @mistrafuturefashion series:

In this final strategy we encourage designers to leave behind the product and work creatively with the consumers and society at large. It is about designing events and communication strategies beyond product design to increase consumer and designer knowledge about the environmental and social impacts of fashion and textiles. Here, the textile designer becomes a ‘Social Innovator’. We reflect on how much has changed for textile designers, and how much potential for the future there is!
“…new ways of thinking about how design can catalyse, nurture, enable and activate positive societal changes towards more sustainable ways of living and working….” (Fuad-Luke, A. 2009)

This is as much a reminder for me as it is for you.

It can be difficult in the moment to express the points that prove “racism is real.” These are some key points that solidify in my mind the extent to which it is real, it is systemic, and it is a priority that we address it. This is not an exhaustive list but a framework to move forward on.

1. All White people are racist because we are all complicit in a racist system.
2. Systemic racism is on purpose.
3. The 13th amendment did not fully abolish Slavery, it allows for prison labor to be used as punishment for a crime. This is why black people are disproportionately incarcerated for minor offenses. Black people have been criminalized since immediately after the Civil War. Slavery is an economic system, that is why for profit prisons exist, corporations use prison labor, and the US accounts for 25% of the world prison population.
4. Slave owners and entire colonizing nations (looking at you Britain and France) got reparations for “loss of property.” These debts were paid off into the 21st century. Black people asking for reparations is more than reasonable, it is necessary and it is not too late.
5. Black Lives Matter is inherently an intersectional movement because [cis hetero male] White supremacy and colonialism are the problem. The problem is the exploitation of human and natural resources.
6. Abolition means reallocating resources to provide for people’s basic needs to reduce crime and reimagine what public safety means. This includes defunding police, prisons, and the military.
7. Resources $$$$$ are spent upholding a racist system when they could be used for healthcare, education, housing, food equity, and to upgrade energy, transport, and waste infrastructure. BASIC SERVICES. Essential services if you will.
8. The Race, Climate, Health, Economic Crises are all connected. These crises threatens the life of BIPOC disproportionately but it is still a threat to us all.
