｜After appearing on the U.S. TV drama Glee, Lavon signed with Ne-Yo’s label, Compound Entertainment.

Her 2013 single “Better Be Good,” featuring Wale, was produced by Jerry Duplessis, cousin of Wyclef Jean and the producer behind The Fugees’ acclaimed album The Score.

Her younger sister is Rhyon Nicole Brown, who appeared in Get Rich or Die Tryin’, the semi-autobiographical film by 50 Cent, and is also active as a singer.

She wrote Dear No One in 2013 - a love song addressed to someone she had never met. A letter to her future person.
Written and produced entirely by herself at 20 years old.
Posted to YouTube. Found by millions of people who were also writing letters to someone they hadn't met yet.
Then she performed it at the Tiny Desk in 2026. Married. A new mother. God Must Really Love Me released three months earlier. And the person she wrote Dear No One to had arrived - exactly the way the song said he would. When the time was right. Not a moment before.
Dear No One was released on October 23 2013 as the lead single from Tori Kelly's second EP Foreword - her first release after signing to Capitol Records. It debuted as iTunes Free Single of the Week. Justin Bieber described her voice to Teen Vogue as "one of the rarest voices I have ever heard." John Legend, Zendaya and Amber Riley were all in awe of her debut live performance.
Tokyo opens the medley at the Tiny Desk - a song from God Must Really Love Me about navigating love and distance and faith - before flowing seamlessly into Dear No One. The transition is the most complete possible summary of Tori Kelly's entire journey. Tokyo is where she is now. Dear No One is where she started. The Tiny Desk put both songs in the same breath and let the distance between 2013 and 2026 speak for itself.
She wrote a love song to nobody. Then found her somebody.
Then performed both songs at the Tiny Desk with an all-woman band behind her as a married mother of one. God must really love her. The song was right all along.

Featuring @torikelly on vocals & guitar, @j.waters7 on guitar, @thatbassgirlkyla on bass, @LynetteWilliams on keys & glockenspiel, @thepocketqueen on drums, and @imjustpeaches , @itsravaughn & @mariah on background vocals. 🎶✨

Tori Kelly's NPR Tiny Desk debut is exactly the kind of performance that reminds people why her live vocals have such a devoted following. Released on September 10, 2026, the Tiny Desk set puts Kelly in an intimate room with an all-woman band of Tiny Desk alumni, giving the focus to her voice, musicianship and songwriting rather than a huge pop production. The performance features songs from her sixth studio album, God Must Really Love Me, including “Hurts So Good,” “Without You,” “Fly,” “Bird,” “Control” and “Tokyo,” alongside her rendition of Stevie Wonder's “Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing.” She also gives longtime fans brief moments from “Nobody Love” and “Dear No One.”

And this is where the Tori Kelly vocal debate gets interesting. Her Tiny Desk format leaves very little to hide behind: it's a small performance space, a live band and a microphone, so moments like this vocal run immediately become the thing people focus on. The early audience reaction has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic, with fans celebrating the long-awaited Tiny Desk appearance and specifically praising her performance.

There is another conversation happening underneath all that praise, though: the setlist. Tori chose to spotlight her current musical chapter, with most of the performance coming from God Must Really Love Me. Some listeners love that because Tiny Desk becomes a snapshot of where an artist is right now. Others wanted more of the older material that introduced them to Tori in the first place, especially songs such as “Nobody Love” and “Dear No One.” One review of the performance specifically argued that the newly assembled band was compelling but that the song selection didn't fully capitalize on Kelly's back catalog.

Featuring @torikelly on vocals & guitar, @j.waters7 on guitar, @thatbassgirlkyla on bass, @lynettewilliams21 on keys & glockenspiel, @ThePocketQuee on drums, and @imjustpeaches , @itsravaughn & @mariah.bernard on background vocals. 🎶✨
