I wanted to share some of my favorite film photos from my last art show, Thaw — a two-artist exhibition.

The title symbolized spring and the end of winter, but it also referenced the historical Thaw in the USSR — a period of relative liberalization after years of repression, marked by hope, change, and a desire for greater freedom. Sometimes it feels heartbreaking to realize that we are still going through many of the same struggles and that so little seems to change.

The war in Ukraine continues. Wars continue to devastate the Middle East. And I often wonder whether I give these events too much importance and let them affect me too deeply. But then I realize it’s because I care. I care about our future, and I want it to be truly peaceful and happy for everyone.

For a long time, I’ve stayed in a “safe zone” as an artist. I avoided making political work. But I want to change that. I want my art to be bold and loud — to scream my views rather than whisper them. I want to show support for people who are oppressed and tell their stories through my own lens. I want to challenge myself and transform my art completely.

I also want to thank everyone who came to see mine and Lilu’s work that day, and all of my friends who continue to believe in me and encourage me to keep painting. Being an artist isn’t easy, and there have been many moments when I thought about quitting.

So thank you.

I promise I’ll keep creating and keep searching for ways to make art that matters — art that, in some small way, can help change our sometimes cruel world.
