ITV News analysis of census data found that in 2001 there were 229 neighbourhoods where more than half of residents spoke Welsh. By the most recent census in 2021, that had fallen to just 141 - a decline of 38%.

The fall has been similarly steep in the communities with the very highest concentrations of Welsh speakers. In 2001, there were 66 communities where more than 70% of residents spoke Welsh. Twenty years later, there were only 40.

Why is this happening? The answer seems to be a fairly rapid demographic change.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts with @robosbornereports from @itvwales on the proposal to build AI data centres in Cardiff.

I explained that data centres are home to thousands of powerful computers that store and process the enormous amounts of data needed to train and run modern AI systems.

One of the key points I made is that if we choose not to build this infrastructure, we will still use AI. However, the jobs, investment, regulations, and decision-making will be based elsewhere. It could also mean that some of the data used to develop and improve AI systems, including sensitive information such as health data where appropriate safeguards and legal frameworks apply, is processed outside the UK rather than here.

Ultimately, it is a trade-off. Data centres require significant electricity and water to operate. In return, they provide the computing power that enables the AI systems we increasingly rely on every day.

These technologies have the potential to support almost every sector. In healthcare, AI can act as an extra pair of eyes for doctors by helping detect diseases earlier, provide additional support for nurses by automating routine tasks, and enable intelligent monitoring systems that help patients remain safely in their own homes for longer. In finance, AI can strengthen fraud detection, improve customer service, and help organisations make faster, more informed decisions.

Like any major infrastructure project, the real question is not simply whether we should build data centres. It is how we build them responsibly, balancing technological progress with environmental sustainability and the needs of local communities.

🔎 The health board says it carried out immediate inspections after being alerted to the sighting but found no evidence of ongoing rodent activity.
🛡️ As a precaution, extra monitoring stations have been installed outside the hospital, with further inspections planned to ensure patient safety.

• ITV has reported 2% revenue growth in the first half of the year.

• The broadcaster announced a £100 million share buyback following Sky's proposed £1.6 billion acquisition of its broadcast and streaming businesses.

• CEO Carolyn McCall called the deal a "defining moment" for ITV and said it will unlock the value of ITV Studios, home to shows including Love Island.

• The takeover is still awaiting approval from UK regulators and is expected to complete within the next year..
