Faculty organizing isn't new.

In 1973, @aaupnational formally adopted its Statement on Collective Bargaining, recognizing collective bargaining as compatible with the Association's longstanding commitments to academic freedom, shared governance, and due process.

More than five decades later, those connections remain central to AAUP's approach to academic unionism because working conditions are also teaching conditions, and decisions affecting faculty ultimately affect the educational environment students experience.

When we talk about making college affordable, tuition is only part of the equation.

What about:
💸 Housing and food?
💸 Books and course materials?
💸 Transportation and childcare?
💸 Enough faculty and advisors to help students succeed?
💸 Availability of the courses students need to graduate on time?

A lower price means less if students cannot access the programs, instruction, and support they need to complete their education.

So let's talk about it: What does meaningful college affordability look like on your campus?

This question will be central to INAAUP's work leading into this fall's @aaupnational Day of Action.

As a new academic year gets underway across Indiana, we’re thinking about the possibilities created every day inside our classrooms that depend on faculty having the freedom to ask difficult questions, follow evidence, introduce students to challenging ideas, and teach according to their professional expertise.

Academic freedom isn't separate from good teaching. It is one of the conditions that makes good teaching possible. Here’s to the faculty across Indiana creating spaces for curiosity, discovery, disagreement, growth, and learning this semester.

University budgets are not just spreadsheets. They are statements of priorities.

The AAUP Indiana University Bloomington Chapter recently commissioned an independent financial analysis of Indiana University, bringing much-needed transparency to questions about IU’s financial health, administrative spending, and lagging investment in instruction and faculty compensation. Nearly 200 people joined the online forum with Howard Bunsis to review the findings and discuss what they mean for faculty, students, and the future of IU.

If you missed the event, watch the full webinar and learn more about what the report found.

We are excited to spotlight Indiana AAUP Executive Board member, Benjamin Robinson! Dr. Robinson's teaching and scholarship at @iubloomington explore 20th- and 21st-century literature, culture, politics, modern thought, and the institutions that shape public life.

With a B.A. in Government from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford, Robinson brings philosophy, political theory, German studies, and cultural criticism into conversation across his work. His research examines realism, socialism, modernism, literary reference, and the relationship between individual experience and larger systems of law, economics, and science.

In the classroom, Robinson invites students to think deeply, question carefully, and approach language, literature, and culture as living sites of inquiry. His teaching spans German film, socialism, contemporary cultural politics, horror and humor, and the philosophical questions that shape modern life.

We’re grateful for faculty whose work reminds us that higher education is, at its best, a place where attention, rigor, and imagination meet!

NEW TODAY: in the New York Times:

In the face of unprecedented authoritarian attacks on our sector, the AAUP is building a powerful and militant resistance movement in defense of American higher education, the freedom to learn, and our democracy.

“Demand letters to universities, a compact which is nothing more than a loyalty oath, ideologically driven state houses that are ending tenure and collective-bargaining rights, ending academic freedom — and you’re going to tell me I should be neutral?” AAUP President Todd Wolfson said.

“There’s no neutrality on a runaway train.”

In 2024, faculty across Indiana spoke out against Senate Bill 202, raising concerns about academic freedom, shared governance, and political interference in higher education.

Those concerns included increased oversight of faculty work, new complaint processes tied to “intellectual diversity,” and limits on how institutions approach teaching and learning. Today, those concerns are still playing out as SEA 202 continues to shape campus policies by shifting power, creating uncertainty for faculty, and raising ongoing questions about the future of academic freedom in Indiana.

AAUP remains committed to protecting the role of faculty and the integrity of higher education.
