We had a blast sharing some examples of artists' books with Upward Bound students at @iuilibrary archives on Monday! Upward Bound is a program that bridges the gap between local high school students and college.

When students are in search of a paper or obscure article needed for their studies, teaching and learning librarian Mahasin Ameen is the one they go to. And if she can’t find it? It doesn’t exist.

At least, that’s the lore that has built around her name throughout the halls, classrooms, and bookshelves that make up the campus of IU Indianapolis.

It’s that same credibility that recently found Ameen named to the 2026 Top Ten Librarians by the American Library Association and awarded the I Love My Librarian Award.

The award, dating back to 2008, allows the public, alongside a selection committee, to recognize the accomplishments of exceptional public, school, college, community college, or university librarians.

“I am so incredibly honored to have been given this award,” Ameen says. “I didn’t expect to win, and when I got the phone call letting me know that I won, I was speechless. I knew I had been nominated, but I didn’t think I would win. When I got to read my nomination letters, those made me cry because they were so sweet and generous. They hammered home the impact that I’ve managed to have with my students over the course of my time here.”

IU Indianapolis librarian Billy Tringali has leveraged manga as a novel teaching tool and gained worldwide recognition in the process.

Tringali is IU’s instruction librarian for undergraduate health sciences, which sounds pretty buttoned up. Until he starts talking about what it entails. “I teach students to hunt things down,” he says. “I do basic AI literacy training. Essentially explaining that you don’t just trust what a chatbot says, because it’s probably lying to you.”

Our librarian feature continues on with a focus centered on Billy Tringali, the @iuilibrary librarian who has leveraged manga as a novel teaching tool and gained worldwide recognition in the process.

Tringali says people are attracted to anime and manga for simple reasons: accessibility and variety. There’s decades’ worth of materials to read and watch, with subject matter ranging from horror, to adventure, to esoteric philosophic ramblings—sometimes all three in the same work. “Whatever interests you, it exists in anime, and there is a massive backlog for you to explore,” Tringali says. “Anime and manga can be powerful teaching tools for enhancing cultural understanding and improving language skills.”

We may have been quiet over our holiday break, but our therapy teams were busier than ever! 🐾🎄

From supporting students during finals week at IU Indianapolis, to spreading comfort at Ascension St. Vincent Indianapolis and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, celebrating at an A Kid Again -Holiday Party, and so many other special visits, our teams truly embodied the spirit of the season. Some of our pups even got to meet Santa! 🎅🐶

We visited so many places and captured so many adorable moments so we’re bringing them together here, because these smiles (and outfits!) were just too cute not to share. 💙✨

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, and we can’t wait to share what’s ahead! 2026 marks a big year for Paws & Think, and we have some exciting (and fun!) things planned to celebrate this milestone 🎉🐾

The Herron Art Library is excited to announce our collaboration with the Herron Galleries! The library is hosting a reference library in conjunction with the exhibition "Actions for the Earth: Art, Care, & Ecology" curated by Sharmila Wood. These books represent themes in relation to the exhibition such as "participatory interventions, healing practices, ecology and science, as well as ancient beliefs" from the library's own collection! This library will be available for browsing from now until the close of the exhibition which is January 17, 2026.

What an amazing two days shared with visiting artist Dr. Darian Goldin Stahl! From the Embodied Books Workshop 📑🩻🎨🖌️📒 to Book-Bodies and Lab Rats lecture 🧪🐀🧫🥼, we have learned so much about the empowering intersection between book arts and medical humanities. Other highlights included a visit to the Ruth Lilly Medical Library History of Medicine room and a wax print transfer demonstration. A huge thanks to everyone involved, especially folks with the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Medical Humanities & Health Studies program, University Library, and Herron School of Art & Design!!
If you haven't taken the chance, please visit the library to view Darian's artists' books "Field Notes: How to Be With" and "Birth Work."
