It's Friday and that means a new Classical Music Indy stream! This stream is available through Thursday, September 10th - don't miss it!

This week, streaming features a new release called “Simple Gifts” by Dr. Otis Murphy, Professor of Saxophone at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The album celebrates friendship, collaboration, and Otis's close ties to Japan, featuring IU alum and pianist, and his wife of nearly 30 years, Haruko Murphy and a dear friend of theirs, Japanese saxophonist Masaki Tadenuma. A few tracks also feature two of the couple’s children, Renée Murphy and Ethan Murphy.

Tune into streaming this week for an interview with Otis about the album, the inspiration behind it, and musical features of some of the selections. Stay tuned after the interview to hear more works from Otis’s catalogue of recordings as well as recordings from some of his current colleagues at IU including previous featured artists, Jasmine Choi and Linda Strommen, in addition to Emile Naoumoff, Petar Jankovic, Mark Kaplan, and many more.

More about Dr. Otis Murphy:

Dr. Otis Murphy holds the position of Professor of Saxophone and former Chair of Woodwinds at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, joining the faculty at the age of twenty-eight and becoming one of the youngest faculty members in its history. He is in great demand as an international soloist and clinician, having performed in more than twenty countries worldwide across four continents: North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. He is the winner of multiple international awards including a GRAMMY Award for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.

Semester two is done!

What a wild ride this past semester has been. I feel like I’ve really found my home at Pacific. The community here is strong; it’s what keeps me going even when conservatory life gets busy. I have so much gratitude for my mentors, peers, and the overall support of this Conservatory.

Time to gear up for a summer full of intensives at Cormont Horn Camp, IU Summer Brass Academy, and Eastman Summer Horn Institute, followed by The International Alphorn Festival in Nendaz, Switzerland. 🎶📯

Two days until Kapwa heads to Fischoff! In honor of that, please enjoy the second movement of @tyree_nesbitt ‘s “Kapwa” for saxophone quartet! We’re super excited to share this music with you all soon! (If you are interested in purchasing the music, send a message to @tyree_nesbitt )
.
Excerpt from program notes:
“Kapwa is a core Filipino concept meaning ‘shared identity’ or ‘shared self’. It is an understanding that the self is not separate from the others around us. It translates loosely to together with the person, fellow human, or neighbor, placing an emphasis on interconnectedness, mutual care, and the belief that all are equal.”

I’m thrilled to announce that I will be pursuing a doctorate in Saxophone Performance (D.M.) at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, studying with Dr. Otis Murphy! Having completed both my undergraduate and master’s degrees at IU, I couldn’t be more excited and grateful to continue my journey here and see what this next chapter holds! :)

I’m so incredibly grateful to have been a part of the 2026 @saxalliance biennial conference at Ohio State University. Getting to meet so many people and watch inspiring performances has made me a better person and a better artist. I can’t wait to return for the next conference!!

Thank you @bobeason1 @stephenpagesax @kenneth_takkei_tse @bettersax @nickzoulek @nmertens.sax @phatgab and @jeffreyjfleung for the time you took out of this event to have a conversation with me.

Also, many thanks to my teacher @shawner9 without your guidance, this event would not have been possible for me!
