Vultures might not be the most glamorous birds, but they’re among the most important.

As nature’s clean-up crew, vultures feed on carcasses, helping prevent the spread of disease and keeping ecosystems healthy.

Yet vultures are in decline worldwide, threatened by poisoning, habitat loss, hunting and collisions with power lines. In some regions, they’re also deliberately poisoned by poachers seeking to prevent vultures from circling above illegally killed wildlife.

What if a safari could take you beyond observing wildlife, and into the conservation work helping to protect it?

We recently spent nine extraordinary days in southern Mozambique, exploring what a truly conservation-led safari experience could look like.

From elephant collaring and buffalo disease testing to aerial wildlife surveys, marine research and exploring the wild coastline of Maputo National Park, this was anything but a conventional safari.

But beyond the adventure, what made this experience so remarkable was the people and science behind the conservation work. The opportunity to understand the challenges facing these landscapes, and to play a small part in the efforts to protect them.

At Honey Guide, this is the kind of travel we believe in. Wild, deeply immersive and built around meaningful conservation.

Our latest journal takes you behind the scenes of this extraordinary expedition, and explores what a different kind of African safari can look like.

The more data that researchers can collect on crocodiles allows for a better understanding of their role in the ecosystem as a whole 📊

On the Cubango River in Namibia, loss of life and limb to crocodiles is an all too common affair. Ivan takes to the ground to investigate, catch, and tag these apex predators.

Recently, Mukwa, a rescued Southern giraffe at Free to Be Wild, became ill and stopped eating. Unable to give him antibiotics through food, we had to resort to using a pole syringe.

Unlike horses, giraffes can kick in almost any direction. Mukwa stands around 18 feet tall and weighs approximately 1.4 tonnes, so getting close enough to treat him safely isn’t an option. This is why a long pole syringe is necessary.

Fortunately, after a series of antibiotic treatments, Mukwa is now back to full health and happily eating and moving around freely again.

How to protect wildlife from your phone - in 20 seconds 🦏

Poachers have been known to pose as tourists to find animals. Insiders have been involved too - in one recent case, a chef who’d worked with the team for more than a decade.

You really never know where information can end up. This is only one tiny tool, but it’s an easy one 🙂

Please save this before your next wildlife trip 🫶
