New post for our paid subs is up! 🎉

Zona Motel has crossed the threshold to 3000 subscribers! Thank you to everyone who has written for us, read us, and otherwise supported us.

Couple weeks ago, we asked you to send us some questions about editing, publishing, and running a literary magazine. Mesha, Juliet, Lucy and Ivan recorded the answers over Zoom for this 3000 subscriber special.

For $7 a month, you get access to all of our paid posts (Meet Me in the Motel Lobby and Gossip), recordings of our Zoom sessions (workshops and cool lectures), and access to our sub only chat on Substack.

New essay on Zona Motel 🖤

Ivan Genc celebrates the late Vedrana Rudan as a generational Croatian author, writing about her masterful use of language, all the times she got fired from her job, her public presence, and his deep frustrations with Croatian cultural institutions.

The Hewes House team met @ivan.genc at AWP 2026 in Baltimore, and we were all charmed. 💗

Poet, graphic designer, social media manager extraordinaire, Ivan has quickly become an important member of the online literary community, which is why we couldn’t wait to interview him for our Confession Album Substack series.

new in burial: in less than ten lines, @ivan.genc builds a brutal secluded world in his poetry. i’m in awe of this one—it’s called ‘crusaders’ and you should turn your phone sideways to read it. real proud to run this, a sort of depressive private myth. so don’t miss it—and read at the l i n k in bio!

Last week I traveled from Paris to the U.S. to join the @heweshouse team for AWP 2026. I flew into New York and drove with Hewes House founder Josh (@chupacabrando), editor/coach/writer @d.sikmashvili, and their exceedingly cute 4-month-old son Theo to the Baltimore Conference Center. From our booth at the bookfair, Dasha, Josh, and I met authors, heard about exciting manuscripts-in-progress, and brainstormed how we could help get those books into the world and into readers’ hands. 📚

Our friends stopped by, like @lucykshaw, @oscardartois, @kris10felicetti, and Pamela Gullard, whose books we were selling at our booth. (My book Cuntry was there, too; thank you to everyone who bought a copy! 💗) I saw a lot of New Orleans friends and writer friends, and yet I know there were tons of people there who I didn’t get to see!

It goes without saying that the off-site readings were excellent, especially the @pubgen and @zona.motel readings, and the @blush_lit / @birdsllc co-hosted readings where my Baltimore roommate, @fmkrit (editor of @sarka.publishing) read! 🔥

See y’all in Chicago! 🌭

New dispatch on Zona Motel 🐐

James Jacob Hatfield reports back from our very own AWP offsite events Zona Day Shift and Zona After Dark. The After Dark reading at Le Mondo, hosted by our co-editors-in-chief Mesha Maren and Juliet Escoria, featured beloved brotherhood members Izzy Casey, Lucy K Shaw, Ivan Genc, Sylvia Jones, Laura Albert and Scott McClanahan.

Thank you to everyone who came to our events in Baltimore. It was very touching to see our brotherhood come together at AWP. With hopefully many more readings, salons and gatherings to come!
