The MMXXVI Scape Awards Shortlist Assembles😉

There comes a point when an awards programme becomes bigger than the people who created it. When extraordinary work draws extraordinary work
towards it, the standard rises, and making this expectational list begins to mean something all on its own.

Because, you can build an awards programme. Create the categories. Assemble an extraordinary international jury. Obsess over every detail. Care deeply about its integrity. But you cannot manufacture significance.

That part happens somewhere else.

It happens when extraordinary practices see value, and they lend us their reputation, their work and their belief in a growing and impactful awards programme. Then magic happens… because nothing of significance is created alone.

And on Friday, the incredible shortlist made their entrance — an extraordinary concentration of South African architecture and design, together in one room.

We say - Cheers to YOU.

Part 1 | THE OBSERVER

It’s difficult to put into words what this evening meant to me.

After months of planning, printing, framing, second guessing, and countless hours behind the scenes, seeing The Observer come to life surrounded by so many familiar faces was something I’ll never forget.

Photography has always been about preserving moments that would otherwise disappear. To see those moments hanging at @kaapstad_toneelhuis walls was incredibly special.

And so it begins. First frames of the first roll (of many) shot in Japan. We got back a few days ago and memories are starting to sink in. An incredible, exotic adventure with an amazing bunch of people led by the ever-energetic @rotem_shachar.

To celebrate her big birthday she led us on her “big gig” in Japan. Two weeks of art, culture, wellness and a solid dose of retail therapy. An unforgettable trip which resulted in 8 rolls of 120 and 10 of 35mm... so be prepared for an incoming flood of Japanese goodness... and hopefully something more in the near future.

Celebrating 4 decades in design. SAOTA’s global 40th celebration!

High above the city, as the golden wash over Milan’s historic buildings gave way to the evening’s shimmering lights, SAOTA ( @_saota ) marked a significant milestone: 40 years of practice, celebrated on Thursday at the iconic Terrazza Martini. Curated and hosted by Scape Magazine, and timed to coincide with Milan Design Week — where the studio’s pavilion for Yardcom ( @yardcomofficial ) has been a notable focal point — the evening gathered architects, designers, collaborators, and friends in recognition of a legacy defined by clarity and enduring influence.

The setting was almost allegorical. With panoramic views, including a striking perspective onto the Duomo, the rooftop spoke to a practice operating at the height of its discipline. Suspended above the intensity of Milan Design Week below, the celebration nonetheless echoed across the city, announced by a flag signalling SAOTA’s milestone.

Over four decades, SAOTA has refined an architectural language with a clear South African identity. The celebration in Milan offered a moment to recognise that SAOTA has grown beyond a firm into an institution, nurturing an industry with an increasingly global impact. As such, SAOTA’s 40th anniversary celebration in Milan also carried a sense of national significance.

Here are some event highlights. 🌟🏙️
