In 1999 I was producing several projects simultaneously: two shorts and four spec spots all grouped together to share resources. I realized within this expanded production schedule I had a “free” day in which I could direct something of my own. I only had one day, though, and a short period of time to decide/prep. I knew I wanted something with a strong narrative, so why not turn to one of the greatest writers of our time - Stephen King? I had fallen in love with an obscure poem included in Skeleton Crew called “Paranoid: A Chant” and had performed it in speech competitions in high school. That seemed the perfect material - short, dark, and an opportunity for dynamic visuals, as I would also serve as my own DP. Being a King fan, I was familiar with his Dollar Deal policy and hoped that I could shoot first and ask permission later (that worked out amazingly well in my favor). Paranoid was incredibly successful for me - at the time of its release online, it hit #1 on iFilm (before the advent of YouTube). Now, as I said before, 20 years later this little film still gets screening requests every year, including two screenings this season!
