‘Territorium, Tell Us What Happened’ a group exhibition curated by Marv Recinto @marvrecinto

—

Territorium, Tell Us What Happened brings together nine Southeast Asian artists to probe the hostile and unresolved nature of administratively constitutive land.

Within the exhibition’s exploration of power and development, Izat Arif @izat.arif examines the ceremonial gestures through which visions of progress are publicly staged and legitimised. Bringing together archival images of ceremonial acts, the series shifts attention from individual leaders to the gestures themselves, revealing how these performances symbolically authorise the transformation of land into projected futures.

Removed from their original contexts, the photographs shift attention away from individual leaders and towards the rituals themselves. Printed on ACP panel board, the works resemble informational outdoor signages commonly found in construction sites and government developments. Together, the series considers the groundbreaking ceremony not as a historical document, but as an enduring bureaucratic performance through which visions of national development are rehearsed, legitimised and repeatedly renewed.

A+ WORKS of ART is delighted to present ‘Territorium, Tell Us What Happened’ a group exhibition curated by Marv Recinto @marvrecinto which brings together the works of nine Southeast Asian artists to interrogate the hostile and unresolved nature of administratively constitutive land:

Through a series of works spanning drawing, video and installation, artists working in activism and/or community organising from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Vietnam reckon with the material consequences of (neo)colonial power.

Curated by Marv Recinto, ‘Territorium’ considers contemporary global and local sociopolitical exchanges, complicating subject/object dynamics within systems of extraction and exploitation. Drawing from Homi Bhabha’s The Location of Culture (1994), the phrase “Tell us what happened” functions both as a demand and an invitation, allowing for subjective and shifting interpretations of history. Rather than defining the interrogator and interrogated, or foreigner and local, the exhibition leaves these positions open, inviting artists and visitors to reflect on and implicate their own positions.

A last look at “Ubat Tolak Bala” by Tiga Tabib Hoo Ha Zat (@tiga_tabib_hoo_ha_zat). No miracles were promised and nothing was guaranteed. Yet somehow, many left feeling slightly better than when they arrived. We’ll take that as a success!!?! 🐍

We are pleased to share that Izat Arif (@izat.arif )’s work, “Lidah-Lidah Tuan Tanah” (2026), is now on view at KADIST @kadistkadist Paris as part of “The Plantation Plot” curated by Sheau Yun Lim (@sheauthings )

To harvest rubber, workers insert a small metal tongue into the tree, guiding the flow of latex into a waiting container. Izat Arif turns this gesture into something sharper: the tongue of the state, endlessly speaking. ‘Lidah-Lidah Tuan Tanah’ (2026) layers speeches, state-sponsored films and historic slogans from Malaysia’s FELDA program, a 1956 land reform that lifted 100 000 families into the middle class, while quietly engineering their gratitude toward the state.
