Check out Izza Alyssa’s (@izzaalyssa) work and more at @selva_nyc! Up until Tuesday, October 13.

Pigeons, 2026, Inkjet prints, staples, 4-channel audio (loop), 35 × 45 mm each

From Izza:

Pigeons is hundreds of passport-size inkjet prints photographs of pigeons —taken across metropolitan cities the artist lived in—stapled directly onto the wall in a dense grid. Beneath it plays an audio reading of banned Indonesian exile literature, translated from English into Indonesian by participants who grew up with restricted access to these texts and remain under government contract.

The work takes its conceptual thread from pigeon behavior: a lone bird is disoriented, but a flock aggregates individual knowledge to find faster, more direct routes home.

Fifth and finally in our graduation series: Izza Alyssa, graduating from the School of Art with a Master of Fine Arts!

From Tangerang and Doha, Izza received her Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Virginia Commonwealth University.

“There isn’t any particular IYA event I’d like to highlight but I love how cozy we are. How we can just go on the group of what feels like 15 people asking ‘picnic yuk!’ or ada yg mau lunch di [insert a residential college here] ga besok?, and sporadic replies roll in from Indos scattered across campus. I find that so charming.”

After graduation, Izza is staying in the United States working as an artist. IYA wishes Izza the best in her career! @izzaalyssa

As I returned to a class titled Exhibition Design (which I taught 2018-23), I snuck in a subtitle *Space to Place* with a sort of naive ambition.

A studio class about public space, especially real people’s physical interactions in real space, and what eventually makes a space a *place*, was something I’d pondered for a while as it’s what we explore through @yeju_and_chat Although we didn’t really learn it at school—at least in the way we approach it—as it doesn’t neatly fall into any field of studies. So for the first time I opened up the class beyond @yalegraphicdesign MFA students, which led to an eclectic group of graduate students from Yale School of Art, Architecture, Drama, and Music!

I knew we’d only scratch the surface in a semester but still wanted the students to experience building something from nothing then see how people interact with/in their creation. If you build it they will come, is hard to achieve but magical when you succeed!

In the proposal I sent to @benweathersben about using the Edgewood gallery prior to the semester, I wrote something like, if we could have the gallery for a period of time, the class will create a project for it; in fact, coming up with what it is as a team is an integral part of the work, etc—basically, I don’t know what we’re gonna do but give us the space ;) (I can’t thank Ben enough for somehow trusting me with this VERY vague proposal and all the support during the process.)

Anyhow, that’s how the exhibition/installation In the Weeds came about, one of three projects during last semester. It really was like: ok, you have this space, during this time, with this budget. What can we do?

The class started with the idea of transforming the gallery into somewhere people would have a picnic, which then developed into this pool noodle park. There were successes and failures, endless WhatsApp messages, Home Depot/Walmart runs, and all-day building sessions inhaling potentially toxic stuff together, but I hope… all fun/learning experiences…?😁 Shoutout to the students.

After the deinstall, the pool noodles were donated to a local community center @jcc.gnh I imagine green noodle waves in their pool this summer🌱
