That’s the last @itsmyshoutltd film of the summer done, and when you see it you’ll agree it deserves a right ‘Swipe’! It’s always lovely to visit new and sometimes hidden parts of Wales for the first time, it was also nice to meet Spider from Shakespeare and Hathaway (another BBC production worth a watch). It’s sad that another summer of films is over, but we certainly had a memorable last day with late night filming by the beach and even a chippy tea!

Hwyl fawr Under Milk Wood 🌚

It has been the pleasure of a lifetime to support this production these past 10 months. This is how you make a statement that mainstream theatre can be accessible and brilliant.

Image 3 My favourite scene Rosie Probert and Captain Cat singing with Adam and Chandu signing. The stage is lit green like under the sea with lots of haze.

To begin at the beginning… or perhaps to begin again, after an evening at the @torchtheatrepembs where words came not as words alone but as tide, as hush, as the slow breathing in and out of a town that never quite sleeps. This little film I offer you now is longer than most a spilling-over, a can’t-quite-keep-it-in for having written the review, I found the words still knocking, still asking to be spoken aloud. Bear with me; I am not one who often turns to the lens, but tonight the voice would not stay quiet. I laughed oh, I laughed and smiled in the knowing way of someone who has seen these faces before, not on a stage, but across tables, in kitchens, in the half-light of memory. And then, without warning, came that quiet sting that soft, salt-edged ache like a tide that turns without asking, and stays, and stays, long after the doors have opened and the night has taken you back. Because @theatrclwyd Under Milk Wood is not only the topsy-turvy, sea-salted streets of Llareggub no, it is the map of us. The architecture of our dreaming, the echo of our almost-forgottens, the small, bright, breaking hearts of our sea-shaken lives.

And here through Craidd, through the core and marrow of it the story opens wider. Not told, but shared. Not placed before us, but built around us. Voices once left at the edge now stand in the centre; hands speak, bodies sing, silence itself finds language. British Sign Language, Visual Vernacular, movement like memory made visible all of it weaving a world where nothing is outside, and no one unheard. As the town drifts, as it must, back into its dreaming, I was left with that feeling Dylan Thomas leaves lingering on the skin that life, in all its strangeness, its sand-edged softness, its sudden sweetness, is happening now. Around us. Within us. Quietly, constantly. No loud bellows here. No quarrels to bruise the air. Only the steady, tidal truths of the human heart, carried on a Welsh voice that still speaks, still sings, still holds. #undermilkwood #dylanthomas #theatre #torchtheatre #welsh

To begin at the beginning, There is something sacred about hearing those words in a theatre in Wales. They are an invocation; an invitation to step out of the clock-ticking world and into the small, semi-detached dreams of a people and into a language that is deeply ours. Sitting in that darkness, I didn’t just watch Under Milk Wood. I felt the mussel-pooled and heron-priested shore of it. I belonged to the slow, black, crow-black, fishing-boat-bobbing sea of our collective memory. Dylan Thomas’s Llareggub has always lived within me a place of dreams and ghosts, of hush and dingle, of gossip and longing. A place where laughter catches in your throat because it sits beside a grief as dark as a pocket. This production is a visceral, bone-deep reclamation and what unfolds on stage is nothing short of transformative. Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent performers are not just present they are integral, essential, shaping the very language of the piece. From Captain Cat mourning lost shipmates,To Lovers who long across distance.Wives and husbands locked in quiet battles.Children, preachers, gossips, ghosts. A whole community revealed not through plot, but through fragments moments, voices, glimpses of lives both ordinary and extraordinary. Staging is Dreamlike and topsy-turvy. Cluttered, glowing houses huddle beneath a looming clock with bodies becaming buildings; movement became memory. Creative captioning moves across the stage like part of the scenery, words dancing alongside action.BSL and Visual Vernacular open the story outwards, making it richer, fuller, more alive:truly poetry in its own right.I found myself thinking of my own people. The ones still here. The ones long gone. The voices I carry without even realising. This production reaches into you, gently, reminding you of where you come from.I laughed in recognition, then felt that quiet, unexpected sting of emotion.Because Under Milk Wood is not just about Llareggub. It is about us. Our small lives. Our big feelings. Our dreams that never quite leave us. A reminder that beneath the surface of our everyday, there is a poetry that never sleeps. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿✨
