The 11th Street Eugene Lang College basement lounge underwent an unexpected shift earlier this semester. What had long been a practical space, home to printers and benches, was gradually cleared out. As the semester progressed, the room sat empty, hinting that something new was in the works.

On Nov. 12, the lounge reopened as a student-run exhibition space, drawing small crowds into an overlooked chapter of campus history. The project, Unveiling Orozco’s Room, was assembled by students of Professor Alhena Katsof’s course Practicing Curating. Tasked with creating a “bootleg” exhibition for Lang’s 40th anniversary, the class turned to a legacy many students hardly know: the long-hidden Orozco Room.

When third-year visual studies student Anna Knyshova proposed the idea of recreating the room to make it accessible again, her suggestion quickly won unanimous support — setting the direction for the exhibition now occupying the lounge.

“[There’s] a group of students at The New School who completely obsess over these murals,” said third-year culture and media and visual studies major Nikki Hassig, one of the students who helped with the exhibition. “You’re either a part of the group of people who have never heard of them, or you are so mentally fixated on them that you can’t get them out of your head. And there’s really no in between.”

The trajectory of the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts has taken many turns. First named the “Freshman Year Program,” and later “The Seminar College,” it was officially established in 1985, named after philanthropist and businessman Eugene Lang, who contributed to the school’s inception through a major gift. The college saw rapid changes, from the creation of departments and significant enrollment surges and declines in a short span of time.
This year, an exhibition in the UC lobby — now moved to a permanent location in the third-floor lobby of the Lang Building — revisits the school’s past to celebrate its 40th anniversary. On Oct. 22, students, faculty, administrators, and alumni gathered for the opening of UNBOUND: Liberal Arts at the New School. Organized as a chronological timeline, the exhibit traces the educational experiments that eventually led to Lang’s founding, featuring a variety of artifacts, from photographs and catalogs to newspaper clippings — even physical tickets from a 2006 spring dance performance.

As a whole, it reflected the story of a college in constant criticism of itself. Photographs of various protests took up a large portion of the exhibit, detailing Lang’s history of student activism and advocacy for institutional change. This included everything from Occupy Wall Street in 2011 to the Free Palestine encampments in 2024.

Since the beginning, Lang students have not been afraid to point out when the college’s progressive values contradict its actions. But it’s different now than it was then.

On Saturday, Oct. 11, A&C Reporter Izzy Hall covered the Drag Gala hosted by the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) at The New School’s Student Hub. It was a night of performances and runway walks celebrating National Coming Out Day!

On Oct. 11, National Coming Out Day, the student hub at 39 W. 13th St. was transformed into a shiny blue and purple ballroom for a night of celebration: a drag gala — to be exact — hosted by The New School’s recently formed student-run Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA). Guests were encouraged by the Partiful invite to dress as their favorite Rupaul Drag Race performer, their most authentic self, or as “the star of the night.” It was an evening of mingling, style, and drag performances by a member of the alliance itself, third-year dramatic arts student Spike Vicious.

The event was highly anticipated by the members of SAGA, a club that came into fruition last spring. Second-year liberal arts student Meyah Henry, who identifies as queer, founded and now leads the club. She was surprised to find very few LGBTQ organizations when she first arrived at The New School, a university often perceived as having a large queer-identifying student body, given its reputation for progressive values and inclusivity.

“Where are the queer events? Where is the queer celebration? ... We don't really have any events,” Henry said. She also mentioned that the Queer Collective is the only other organization at The New School specifically dedicated to hosting events for queer students, as one of the programs within the peer health advocate framework. Due to a lack of student-run LGTBQ+ organizations on campus, Henry was inspired to start SAGA.

WHAT IS THE PLAY?

Well I can tell you one thing for sure, it’s a play. A play that features lots of teen angst, robot housewives, and not very much playwriting. I won’t tell you any more because you simply have to come see for yourself! Ticket link in bio :)
